Cosmic Miniatures

At 91 years of age, Alexander Kluge is solidly regarded as a trailblazing figure in New German Cinema and the avant-garde. He remains active and curious about media, so it’s no wonder that he recently began experimenting with artificial intelligence. He has been exploring a particular programme developed in Munich for medical research, which he systematically strains in order to find his images at the farthest ends of the system's creative faculties. With these, Kluge plays in the same essayistic fashion beloved from his television work – historical footage and a plenitude of texts, comics, charts and cabaret. In short: facts and fictions freely intermingle.

The Memory Guardians

In the court of the Memory Guardians, a trial ensues about what to do with the statue of the Kneeling Woman, following her defacement in Zehlendorf and relocation to the Zitadelle Museum in Spandau. While one counsel advocates that the statue be publicly displayed in the Zitadelle Spandau Museum to caution against “left-wing extremism”, another argues that she should be kept in the more private Schaudepot indefinitely to educate about difficult history. Yet another argues for her to be destroyed, given the racist beliefs of her creator, the violence against her and the messiness of contextualising all this Black pain for a public.

House of Cars

A UFO lands in Brandenburg: The American car manufacturer Tesla is building a huge factory in the quaint town of Grünheide. With the announcement, controversy arrives, quickly derailing any sense of objectivity in the debate. While some celebrate the economic upswing or even hope to combat climate change, others are alarmed by Tesla’s lax adherence to building regulations in the middle of a drinking water protection zone. Excitement and outrage both grow as Tesla also plans to expand the factory site. As local resistance feels betrayed by decision-makers, the AfD senses an opportunity. An entertaining yet unsettling case study of our culture of political debate and the overwhelming nature of the climate crisis in the microcosm of Grünheide.
