23 Thoughts About My Mother

In a series of 23 vignettes, the artist offers up memories of his mother who died in March 2020. If offers a mix of analog snaps and diary footage (brain surgery, nursing homes), along with archival material from her former Indonesian home, including the camp she was dispatched to during the Second World War. Slowly a portrait emerges of a quietly determined activist and second wave feminist, community volunteer and family maven, marked like so many others by a war that never quite ended.

HERBARIA × PELICULA: Field Portfolio

HERBARIA × PELICULA: Field Portfolio is the single channel version of a multichannel installation which examines the work taking place at the HAM Herbarium at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario. The Herbarium is located along the edges of the Cootes Paradise wetland on the traditional territory of the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee peoples. Its collection comprises over 60,000 specimens from around the world, though it’s primarily composed of local vascular plant types gathered by members of the scientific community alongside educated hobbyists and amateur botanists. Combining documentary footage of the herbarium, code-generated database animations of digitized specimen sheets, and images of plantlife processed in plant material, the film positions the specific labour of botanical gathering and collection as an image-making practice, in addition to a mode of knowledge production.

The Curious Case Of The Boy Jones

Following her coronation in 1838, Britain's Queen Victoria was being relentlessly pursued by a strange teenager, Edward "the Boy" Jones, who had an uncanny ability to sneak into Buckingham Palace without being detected. "If he had come into my bedroom, how frightened I would have been," the Queen wrote in her journal. As a result of his multiple intrusions into Buckingham Palace, the Boy Jones became a media celebrity. Fearful that he might injure or even assassinate the Queen, or kidnap the Princess Royal, the government of Prime Minister Lord Melbourne wanted to get rid of the Boy Jones at all costs.

Everything is Right Here

Kahgee from Saugeen First Nation territory, develops her film with dandelions (a colonial plant) and trilliums (indigenous to the Saugeen territory) to consider their histories (how they came to be on the land) and their medicinal properties. At the center of my metaphorical bag writes Kahgee, is cultural knowledge that is deeply woven into the land. Plants are also connected to understanding the world in terms of change, transformation, survival and interconnectedness.
