Der Wildheuer

It was a Sunday in July 2016, a dark day for Sepp Gisler. The 62-year-old mountain farmer from Uri fell 300 meters to his death while haymaking game on a steep slope on the Rophaien. The father of six was an experienced game hunter and knew the dangers of this tough work. But a residual risk remains, especially when working almost vertically. After his father's death, Julia, the youngest daughter, took over the mountain farm on the Oberaxen. And she too will have to climb back into the "Wildi", because there is no other way. The valuable hay from the Planggen is the fodder basis for the small farm high above Lake Uri.

At the Fringes of the World

They live on the edge of the known world - far from civilization but affected by its consequences nonetheless. The photographer Markus Mauthe visited these last indigenous peoples to capture the inherent beauty of their cultures, before they too fall victim to ever-advancing globalisation. The journey leads from South Sudan and Ethiopia to Malay sea nomads and Brazilian Indians in Mato Grosso, who have started to defend themselves against the destruction of their natural habitat. The result is a film that captures intimate and unadulterated encounters with sumptuous photography – while also serving as an appeal for the preservation of indigenous cultures, which will surely perish unless we rethink and act accordingly.

Giant Generation Change - The New Rethe Bridge

It is heavier than a dozen jumbo-jets and twice as high as the Brandenburg gate. It is more than just a bridge. It is a landmark – Hamburg's Rethe Bridge from 1934. The bridge is one of the first job-creation schemes of the Nazi regime. It’s a massive structure that captures the basic meaning of the Hamburg harbour. It is only because of its overpowering size that the bridge managed to survive the wear and tear of the decades and the second world war. But, like all things, its time has come to an end. The bridge is to be replaced – completely. A film that highlights the history of the old bridge: the Nazi construction, the demolition, the reconstruction, the add-ons and the maintenance

Die Seele der Geige

How can we describe the intimate connection between an instrument and its player? How can a piece of wood become "the love of my life", as Frank Peter Zimmermann calls his 1711 Stradivarius "Lady Inchiquin"? The instrument, worth 6 million Euros, was locked away in a safe for more than two years - due to bankruptcy of its lender, a German bank. This documentary follows the world renowned violinist as he reunites with his beloved violin. Zimmermann's story is intertwined with another master's search for perfection. We look behind the scenes and witness the creation of a contemporary violin by the "21st Century Stradivari", Martin Schleske.

stiffness 1 – 3 / 7

Every ten years, the filmmaker Albert Sackl sits naked in a black space in front of his camera, which he lets run on time lapse — shooting image for image, for around four hours each time, to arrive at a scant three-minute film — until all 4,000 frames of a standard 16mm roll of film have been shot. The basic idea (and not so simple challenge) comprises maintaining an erection for hours through the energy of friction, which (spoiler alert!) is not always possible. stiffness seems simple at first glance but is a cunning undertaking fluctuating between narcissism and self-demolition, frenzy and wasteland, self-satisfaction and self-torture (Stefan Grissemann).

The legacy of a driven man - why Rudolf Geigy set out for Africa

The film shows the genesis of the Swiss Tropical Institute under the direction of Rudolf Geigy. From his employees and students he was partly admired, partly feared. His moods and outbursts were legendary. As a wealthy industrialist, he was able to afford virtually everything and generously invested in the establishment of the Tropical Institute, but also made considerable development aid in Africa. A search for traces with contemporary witnesses.
