The film takes the sprawling form of a Chinese checkers games, creating a collage of associations evoked by movements and gambles. Through one family, three different Germanys take shape, including their problematic subchapters. The film centres on the mother who is a passionate Chinese checkers player as well as a tailor and fashion designer in the GDR. The mother’s favourite piece of work is a showpiece dress with piping, cording, tabs and embroidery around the neckline. One has to love this film, if only for the tender re-animation of words we presumed obsolete.

In the highlands of Tigray - northern Ethiopia - on the edge of the escarpment that descends steeply to the Danakil dessert, Hagos Mashisho and Desta Gidey have toiled and struggled for years to turn the rugged slopes of the East African Rift Valley into fertile ground. They have grown crops here not only to feed themselves and their family, but also to share with others, in particular the pilgrims who regularly pass by on their way to the monastery of Gundagundo. Touched by the kindness of their hosts, the pilgrims have given them the biblical names "Abraham" and "Sarah". The film explores the work ethos and grace of these Tigrean farmers: the cheerful mood with which they do what needs to be done; the devotedness to the tasks at hand; the coordinated movements of humans and animals as they work when ploughing, sowing, harvesting, threshing; - and finally those moments of invocation when the dependence on nature and the transcendent are acknowledged.

After an apprenticeship as a butcher and having been hired by a freighter and, he finally discovered boxing, his real passion. In 1971, he fought against Muhammad Ali and was an European Champion in his category. But Blin has never had it easy. He have always had to make his own way overcoming strong setbacks. Many years after his Golden years, the director Arne Körner makes this film portrait.

For this found footage animated film I downloaded 10,000 photographs of the sunset, adjusted each one and arranged them in order, setting into motion a singular, colossal, collective sunset.

Ibrahim’s story shares a deeply personal and eye-witness perspective into Fortress Europe—the policies that have rendered migration treacherous and often deadly—as well as the nuanced challenges LGBTQ+ refugees face in their homelands, en route, and during resettlement.

A wonderful evening with the great songs of this artist, who has been traveling around the world for over half a century with his guitar, his stories and songs. The man, whose voice is so incomparably warm and deep, whose guitar playing is so puristic, yet so full and expressive, and whose wonderfully simple lyrics base always on deep thoughts and a touch of melancholy.
