Dr Birdman

If you speak some Thai, it’s not hard to follow though unfortunately there’re no English subtitles for this lovely experience. Watching a cardiologist flip through fifteen books of nature sketches and notes, lovingly drawn and painted over thirty years, doesn’t sound like much of a movie. Instead of attending a lecture, however, we are absorbed and amused because our forest guide by art happens to be Rungsrit Kanjanavanit or ‘Dr Mong’, well-known Thai conservationist, bird-watcher and nature artist.

Like Raining at the End of April (Director's Cut)

Like Raining at the End of April (Director’s Cut) is an experimental film that reworks selected footage from the 2012 experimental film In April the Following, There Was a Fire, blending it with material from the director’s other works (Wichanon Somumjarn). This film deliberately presents its narrative in reverse chronological order, moving counter to the original storyline. The film is accompanied by a score composed by the band Local People Rockband (a music alias of the director himself), taken from a concept album titled Countryman. The album consists of 13 + 2 tracks meant to be listened to in sequence. Once the final track ends, the film reverses itself, looping back to the beginning. Through this structure, viewers are invited to discover a moving and memorable cinematic and auditory experience.

Methylene Blue

a sonic and moving image collaboration between Liew Niyomkarn and Chulayarnnon Siriphol, commissioned by Sofia Lemos, for the multi-platform research programme SONIC CONTINUUM. Borrowing from the language of cosmetics advertisement, mass media and Thai soap opera, the work addresses questions around voice and speech in the context of the recent mobilisations in Bangkok. Using sound synthesis, Niyomkarn contrasts melodic parallels between the Thai anthem and the popular song 'Golden Land’ with dialogues and conversations ripped from and recorded in global protest events. Drawing on these sonic granularities, Chulayarnnon folds digital noise into an otherwise common manifestation of a capitalised gendered division of affects, intimacy and politics in contemporary Thailand.
