Brecht & Weill: Die Dreigroschenoper Festival d'Aix-en-Provence 2023

Theater director Thomas Ostermeier stages Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's timelessly magnificent "Threepenny Opera" with the ensemble of the Comédie Française in Aix-en-Provence, based on a new translation of the original text by Alexandre Pateau. In London's underworld district of Soho, the beggar king Jonathan Peachum and the criminal Macheath, known as Mackie Messer, are at war. The latter also seduces the daughter of the shady "businessman". When he finds out that the two have secretly celebrated a wedding, he decides to get rid of his rival. He is aided in his endeavors by Jenny, a cunning whore who betrays her ex-lover to the police. Back to the original: First performed in 1928, the opera parody strings together one biting musical number after another in cabaret style and jazz rhythm, breaking the boundaries of the genre, which until then had been considered bourgeois. Because the "Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill is clearly political!

Shadowless - In Transit

A dreamy and enigmatic film about facing your own shadow and stare back at it through the viewfinder of a camera. A hybrid fiction-documentary film about a traveller from Iran whose shadow wants to make itself independent upon arrival in Germany. Facing it and gazing at the shadow with the help of his video camera, memories and flashbacks cut rhythmically into the traveller’s records of the present until a remix of his past and future occurs. All this in an in-between space, in a non-place, ‘In Transit’.

Muttermale

“The woman is the man's servant”, she grew up with this sentence from her father, Lenia Friedrich's great-grandfather. How much has this way of thinking changed from today, where can you still discover parallels? Her hands testify to her hard work as a housewife, for which she certainly rarely received recognition. Of course, there was never any monetary reward for this, the father was the breadwinner of the family, although she did the reproductive work in silence. Especially the quiet work in the background, which makes it possible to maintain the entire society, Lenia Friedrich would like to put in the foreground.

Bits + Pieces

How does it feel to fall apart into bits and pieces? And what if the wind takes these bits and pieces on a journey? Maybe the wind knows way better than us where to go and where to stay and when to return to the point where it all began. This is a short film about thoughts and longing, about the wind and the sea. And about the harbor and the ferry as places that perfectly represent this kind of longing. "Bits + Pieces" is based upon a poem that goes by the same name. It takes you on a melancholic, but hopeful journey. The film was shot on 8 mm black-and-white film stock and is accompanied by text animations that where etched into 16 mm black film leader. This technique is called direct animation and is as old as the medium of film itself. The voice has been recorded with a dictaphone that uses mini cassettes. Filmed on location in Hamburg, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden in the summer months of 2022.

The XXL hauler is manufactured in Braås, southern Sweden, where around 550 employees produce a total of six different hauler models. The A60 is the largest vehicle built at the plant, and due to its enormous weight, most components can only be installed using cranes.

Oskar Fischinger - Musik für die Augen

Long before there were computer-animated images, Oskar Fischinger compiled abstract forms, pulsating color patterns and moving animations and combined them with music in short experimental films. In this documentary, Harald Pulch sheds light on the life and work of the "father of the video clip" and also shows an exclusive interview from 1993 with Elfriede Fischinger, the filmmaker's widow and colleague. In it, she talks about the couple's life as artists, who first worked in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and finally in Hollywood.
