Man Who Put Idea In

The film is about the life and philosophy of the hero of the film Kamenskikh Igor Kuzmich, who lives in the village of Pavlovsk, Perm region, founded by the Stroganovs. In the appearance of Kuzmich, the image of Diogenes is recognized. A ramshackle leaning hut with broken windows, a never-heated stove, an old cousin on the next bed. And here, in the house, there is a goat and two horses, which in fact are both a symbol of Kuzmich's life and his stove. The transmigration of souls and the new coming of Christ to Earth, unity with Nature and God - this is his Faith. "When all borders between countries and people are erased," he says at the end of the film, "then the kingdom of God will come."

Robert. A Fortunate Life

Aleksander Sokurov brings the treasures of the Hermitage back into the light by making films about artists and their paintings. He has chosen the painter Hubert Robert, who spent a long time in Italy, and whose preference was for creating ancient ruined landscapes and naturalistic portrayals of times past. He was successful with the wealthy, who bought his works from him. The camera pans across the paintings while Sokurov speaks of a happy era, when the artist was at one with the spirit of the times, and agreed with the taste of his clients. Just how far removed from us this is, is shown by pictures of a "Nô" performance which are inter-cut on the screen. No words are necessary to describe what everybody knows today.

The House on Arbat Street

The characters in this film all lived in the same building: the Knights' House, at 35 Arbat Street in Moscow. Built at the beginning of the century for a few privileged families, this sumptuous residence will become after the revolution a collective apartment building. Like millions of Russians, those who lived together in this building were marked by the trials and tragedies of history. Marina Goldovskaya went in search of the former inhabitants, now dispersed. They speak to us with modesty and emotion about their memories, their secret garden and... their neighbors at 35 Arbat Street.

To My Women Friends

In To My Women Friends, revealing interviews with six Russian lesbians convey the joys and hardships of being a lesbian in the former Soviet Union. The six women are interviewed separately, but splices of party/meeting scenes show a vital and strong community. While Tatjana speaks hesitantly about her sexuality, believing it to be a private matter, Muchabat charmingly flirts with the filmmaker. This fascinating documentary touches on a range of issues including women's prisons, transsexuality, lesbian and gay community organizing (the Wings Association, a lesbian group), coming out and homophobia. Under article 121 (which criminalizes homosexuality) lesbians and gay men in the former Soviet Union faced the threat of imprisonment, blackmail, government harassment and family rejection.
