Tobishima

Tobishima used to be a prosperous sea transportation hub in the Sea of Japan, but now it is a quiet island with a small and aging population. The only junior high school student in the island will graduate this year, and his school, Tobishima Elementary and Junior High School, will be closed at the end of this school year. This film captures the daily lives of the various people living on Tobishima and follows the activities of those who are struggling to maintain the community and connect the island to the future while facing the harsh reality of the situation.

ANGERME Kamikokuryo Moe Birthday Event 2020 (アンジュルム 上國料萌衣バースデーイベント2020) was Kamikokuryo Moe's 21st birthday event. It took place on October 26, 2020 with two shows at LANDMARK HALL. In compliance with government policy due to the coronavirus pandemic, cheering, crowding, standing, and closeness in the venue were prohibited, and wearing masks was required to enter. From October 26 to October 27, 2020, a recording of the event was digitally distributed to fanclub members who apply.

Despite being born and raised in Japan, having paid taxes, and naturalized, they are not able to receive the minimum guaranteed pension. In March 2000, seven Deaf Zainichi-Koreans file suit in the Kyoto District Court protesting unreasonable discrimination that foreign nationals above a certain age and who have a disability are not able to receive disability pensions. Through interviews with the plaintiff and supporters, and past documentaries, the director brings us face to face with historical and political issues of “disability” and “ethnicity”. Produced and screened at Yokohama Triennale 2020.

In this documentary film, a companion to the book, Arai interviews five women from Ofunato, ages 79 to 100, who have survived as many as three tsunami in the past century! They talk about their childhood memories, their fortitude in the face of war and natural disaster, and the extraordinary depth of spoken Kesengo. Director Suzuki Yoi’s rich poetic sensibility offers a vision of humanity in all its complexity, as the film weaves together their Takuboku translations, poetry by the women themselves, and local songs. Their stories and their language will become a part of everyone who listens to their voices
