In the Border

Vero lives with her older brother Abel, and they both work together at a construction site. There she has to put up with the advances of some of the workers, which is something she’s used to doing because she’s had this job since she was a lot younger. In the Border follows this character on her path to becoming a better person, which is represented in her way of helping a cousin with an abusive husband and in the NGO she signs up for to give food to the homeless who live on Paseo Colón Avenue. But there’s another parallel film here, and it’s the one in which Campusano’s eye captures the City of Buenos Aires in his own unique way. One of those great moments takes place as soon as the film begins, when Campusano stops to film some street musicians while they rap on a subway platform.

Longing Souls

The 10-year-old Camila spends the summer with her grandmother, almost exclusively in the company of women. They lovingly look after each other; cook, eat and bathe together; care for their skin and talk a lot. Camila quickly realises that there is more that binds them together than mere kinship: a curse is said to have been cast on the women in the family, causing unhappiness in their relationships. This belief is convenient, given that Camila longs for nothing more than her parents’ separation.

The fifth cartridge exposed by Yonay Boix’s super 8 camera offers a continuation of the author’s filmed journals that he carefully composes frame by frame, exploring the potential of celluloid and in-camera editing. This time, the leitmotiv is either a spot of light or a dark spot that he generates using a pierced piece of paper and a glass filter onto which he has previously painted a black dot, respectively. These procedures trace back to the mechanisms of early cameras, reminding us that what we see is not the world but the glimpse of it that a contraption was able to catch.

These Days

In "Spaces #2", 7 internationally acclaimed directors shot, after commissioning by the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, a short film at home, making their own timely comment on the new reality that we live in. The project is inspired by the book "Species of Spaces" by the French novelist, filmmaker, documentalist, and essayist, Georges Perec and the days of quarantine. The idea is to create a film at home, using the environment, the people or the animals in that space. The only outdoor areas that may be used are outdoor living spaces, such as the terrace, the garden, the balcony and the stairwell. "These Days" is Mateo Bendesky's submission.
