To The Dancers

It’s 2023 and Britain is in pieces. Brexit is an embarrassment and electricity bills are through the roof. For many, heading to a local music venue is a necessary escape from life’s bleakness. But what’s on the cards for small music venues of today, fighting to survive the trials and tribulations of late-stage capitalism? In the northeast city of Newcastle the non-profit, multifaceted safe space Cobalt has made its home. There, the local queer scene and its queens' party till late, and rising stars such as Alabaster DePlume grace the stage. Anyone who's been to Cobalt will tell you of its unrivaled hospitality and enchanting atmosphere. Yet even for a venue as unique as this one, existence is a fight for survival. Founders Mark, Kate, and son Jacob must commit to 70-hour weeks to navigate challenges such as threats from developers in their gentrifying neighborhood. Overheads rise and ticket sales dwindle as the disposable income of regulars is squeezed.

Trágame nube (el cuerpo establece el ritmo)

The two films in this gallery face each other on opposite walls, presenting an identical structure that corresponds to complementary camera perspectives. The difficulty of watching the two sides at once deconstructs the idea that there is a single point of view of both camera and projection, and invites viewers to reconsider how their own bodies interact with the films they watch. A response to José Val del Omar's inquiries into a potential "other cinema" that exists in the intervals between frames, Trágame nube approaches the phenomenon of "persistence of vision" in combination with what Val del Omar called espejo aprojimante, both a technique in which film is projected onto a mirror to diffract images and a reference to cinema as a system that proposes awareness of a shared corporeality among its viewers.

Pig Tales

Pigs are animals that we think we know well, but our representations of them are sometimes far from the truth. Extremely intelligent and sensitive, they share many similarities with humans, not only genetic. Meet five piglets and follow their lives from birth to adulthood. A miniature domestic pig in California, a truffle pig in France’s Périgord, a feral pig returned to the wild in the United States, a wandering pig in a village in northern Laos, and a “tourist attraction” pig on a small island in the Bahamas. What part of their instincts do pigs keep despite their domestication? What type of interactions can they have with Man? Five pigs, five destinies, five realms. This touching wildlife documentary weaves together five compelling stories that reveal little-known secrets about pigs.

Femboy Beat Making: The Making of Trout Jazz

In the spring of 2022, three music students stumble upon a treasure trove of old school recording equipment while helping to clear out a basement beneath the college they all attend. Inspired, they build a recording studio with their newly acquired hardware in a disused storage room on campus. The trio then plan to spend the next ten weeks cooped up in their claustrophobic studio in hopes of pioneering a new genre of music called 'Trout Jazz'.
