Nude Portraits – Gundula Schulze

Photographer Gundula Schulze wrote her graduate thesis on "nude photography of women in East Germany". It's a subject she continues to pursue in her photography. She considers the stereotype of superficial nude photography anachronistic, and talks vividly about being at pains to develop a relationship of trust with the women she photographs. Schulze wants to show what makes up the "whole woman", living up to her position in East Germany. Scenes of women in the professional world have been edited into the film.

The Tales of Hoffmann - Teatro Regio di Parma, 1988

"Despite the multitude of characters and situations, the plot is simple: the eternal flow of life. It is based on Les contes fantastiques d’Hoffmann, a play by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who were inspired by some of the stories of the German E.T.A. Hoffmann. On a drunken night in the city, Hoffmann tells how he courted and lost three girls, his impossible loves: Olympia, a mechanical doll that only he believes to be truly human; Giulietta, the courtesan who steals his reflection in a mirror; and Antonia, a young woman who sings until she literally dies." Un'età da sballo

The sixteen-year-old Giulia, daughter of a successful writer and painter, leaving the college, spends her holidays in the family's villa, at the seaside, with a group of friends of her age. One day he arrives at the villa Paolo, a colleague of Giulia's father, who has to complete a screenplay with him. The girl decides with cold determination to entrust precisely to Paul the "task" to "free her" of virginity, thus beginning a skilful maneuver of priming. At the same time, Giulia's mother falls in love with Paolo, and just when he decides to declare his love, he is rejected by the young man, who is now entangled by the sixteen year old. At the end Giulia, having achieved her goal - declaring however, immediately afterwards, repentant - unloads Paolo and returns to her peers.

Holiday Film

A woman on a meadow, strolling around, narcisstically involved, wandering. Now and again one can see her breasts through her half-opened shirt. The camera films with a powerful telephoto lens. This idyll is radically destroyed when the woman suddenly looks directly into the camera. There is an immediate cut (the voyeur has been discovered) and the whole sequence of events begins from the beginning again, but each time re-filmed from the last till finally, only a completely abstract, flickering picture remains.
