Antarktis

Javier is a young filmmaker, grandson of Mario Raúl Arcaro, a scientist and inventor who, in 1953, was part of the first Argentine expedition to Antarctica. They were the first to enter the Snow Hill shelter, where the crew of the Swedish expedition led by Otto Nordenskjöld was stranded in 1903. A few years after Mario´s death Javier discovered a small wooden box that belonged to a Swedish expeditionary, so he decided to go on a journey following his grandfather's footsteps. He´ll also have to face unexpected twists, though.

Voice Engine

In Voice Engine, 2021, Rosa Barba further explores ideas that undergo perpetual transformation of images and their translation through sound. The work destabilizes the old hierarchy of cinema components, freeing them up from their original use and letting them interact in new and unforeseen ways. Voice Engine resonates with Barba’s sculptural approach to film and the relation between the work and the viewer. At Kunsthal, the voices of choristers from Rotterdam power a set of projectors. Their song is a new, unique composition closely aligned to the film material. The choristers activate the 16mm and 35mm projectors with the various frequencies of their voices. Here, light and sound can respond unexpectedly to one another using the analogue footage and the timbre and power of analogue voices.

Belgrade Forest Incident …and What Happened to Mr. K?

In 2018 the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, referred to in the film as Mr. K, captured the world’s attention as little by little, snippets of his fate became public. What started out as a mysterious disappearance at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, slowly spiraled into an elaborate web of lies, and ultimately, a horrific murder. The news was particularly disturbing as it seemingly happened at the behest of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, prompting many world leaders to step into the ring and voice their condemnation, including the US president, “Mr. T”.

Outhere (for Lee Lozano)

After 'Communicating Vessels' (FID 2020), the artist-filmmaker duo Annie McDonell and Maïder Fortuné are back. Once again, the question is that of art, its teaching, the painful articulation between thought, practice and the living shell that embraces and brings it to life. An affair as ancient as the first Romantic period, its complexity fully intact, the challenge here is multiplied by the study of an extremely singular and insufficiently known figure of 20th century history: Lee Lozano. Painter, particularly radical conceptual artist and then recluse, for many years this woman filled similar small coloured spiral notebooks with her thoughts and plans for her work.

the air is subtle, various and sweet

Mixing found footage from Egyptian television, with footage of two dancers shot on the Wanstead Flats nature reserve in east London, Adham Faramawy's work considers the body’s relationship to ideas of ‘the land’, plant taxonomy, and ideas of roots/heritage. The film relates this exploration to the passing of the artists’ father during the pandemic, and their relationship, particularly their father’s strong affinity as an artist and musician with his falahi (rural, agricultural and working class) roots and his home town Toukh, north of Cairo.
