At The Met: Olmsted and Central Park

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition, "Art of the Olmsted Landscape," the camera moves out for a tour of Central Park with Dr. Charles E. Beveridge, editor of the Frederic Law Olmsted papers at American University, who relates some of the history of this world-famous New York City park. We hear the words of Frederick Law Olmsted, the park's designer, and see historical photographs and engravings of the park in the mid-nineteenth century when it was created.

Friendly Witness

In Friendly Witness, Sonbert returned, after 20 years, to sound. In the first section of the film, he deftly edits a swirling montage of images - suggestive of loves gained and love lost--to the tunes of four rock songs. Fred Camper said, "At times the words of the songs seem to relate directly to the images we see...; at other times words and images seem to be working almost at cross-purposes or relating only ironically. Similarly, at times the image rhythm and music rhythm appear to dance together, while at others they go their separate ways." -- Jon Gartenberg. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with Estate Project for Artists with AIDS in 1998.

Die Basis des Make-Up

Belgium, 9th october 1979. A cook drills a hole in the door to the "camera obscura" (lat. dark room) of his boss, a persian-american carpet dealer, who lives together with two women and a narcistic drunkard in a dark carpet-cave. All the characters walk a fine line between professional and private life, between dependence and exercise of power trying to save his/her love. Blatant voyeurism rules. The characters mutually spike their feelings whenever possible driving wedges of love into one another's flesh. Masochistoic institution grows out of romance, which portrayal degenerates into a comedy.

Rise and Fall of the Borscht Belt

At its peak, one million New York Jews spent their summers in the Borscht Belt, the birthplace of Jewish-American iconoclastic humor. This film shows how these Catskills communities were run by women, and how class divisions were reflected in the resort hotels: upwardly-mobile hotel guests were entertained by a who's-who of talent, while in the bungalows, do-it-yourself burlesque and vaudeville reigned among the blue-collar families. This film is happy, humane, ironic, and, finally, bittersweet, as we see that today's Jews no longer share the tastes or aspirations of their parents.

Rockaby

A one-woman play written by Samuel Beckett at the request of Daniel Labeille. The piece was produced by Labeille on behalf of the State University of New York's Programs in the Arts for a festival and symposium in commemoration of Beckett's 75th birthday (Wikipedia). A self-reflective drama of a figure, W, rocking "to and fro" in her dead mother's rocking chair wearing her mother's sequined funereal garment. With the aid of her pre-recorded voice, W recounts the different phases of a single memory in a bid to connect with "another creature like herself" before rocking herself into an eternal sleep.

Fable for a New Age

Four women in the throes of frustrated sexual desire. Not making fun of them but rather sending up the absurdities of passion and the ways in which it undermines our dignity. One woman, given to heady, long-winded monologues and carrying on like a silent screen vamp, envisions herself as a kind of Eve in the Garden of Eden about to seduce her Adam--but instead of being overcome by the fabled scents of Araby (or such) she is assaulted by the odor of "old socks, gasoline and aftershave."

Bobby McFerrin: Spontaneous Inventions

Filmed live at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood in February 1986, Spontaneous Inventions was Bobby McFerrin's first live concert video, and was the basis for his debut album with Blue Note Records. Spontaneity has always been the key to a Bobby McFerrin performance, and this particular appearance is an early testament to his astonishing creativity and vocal technique. With a special and surprise guest appearance by sax legend Wayne Shorter as an added inspiration, this program shows Bobbys unlimited creative resourcefulness and illustrates how and why he received two Grammy Awards in 1986.
