A Garden of Joy in a World of Sorrow

Gubaidulina is one of the most prominent and profound composers of the second half of the 20th century. According to many, she is the most outstanding female composer of our time. Her work reflects a desire to organically unite the qualities of Western and Eastern art, influenced by spiritual and religious concepts. Through faith, she also finds meaning in her creative work. Along with Alfred Schnittke and Edison Denisov, Gubaidulina is part of the so-called "trio" of Moscow composers associated with the avant-garde movement.

Katya Krenalinova

The protagonist in this experimental documentary is the homeless young artist and drifter Katya Krenalinova, who burned down the house of her mother and stepfather. And now she sleeps at her studio, scraping together just enough to survive. Alexandra Lihacheva places Krenalinova center stage in her directorial debut. She is on-screen for almost the entire documentary: in extreme close-up while being cross-examined by the public prosecutor, and muddled but stoical as she reveals her motives. She has no regrets, and she would be just as happy to set the entire city alight. In the rare moments that Katya is filmed outside, she wanders around in the snow near the burned down house. She poses for the camera like a model in an artistic music video, elusive and mysterious.

Х-Х

A whole ethnographic study on the topic of who are the fans of "Leningrad", performed against all the laws of the genre. The musicians themselves act as accomplices in the filming process here — one of the cameras, for example, is fixed on Shnurov's stomach. Other cameras follow the fans of the band, quite funny and accurately recording their emotions and actions from hugs to fights and transmitting the atmosphere of unbridled fun and off-scale adrenaline, which is famous for "Leningrad". Terribly funny, tearfully cute, sometimes scary - the effect of a full-length presence.

The Luck Meter

It is a portrait film of Boris Mirkin, one of the pioneers of Soviet programming. In the film, Mirkine does not speak so much of the artificial intelligence as the chapka (fur cap) he bought in London, the collection of horse figurines or his children scattered in different countries. In fact, it is not really a gay story because it is the portrait of a whole generation of Soviet scientists. He started working in cybernetics in a country where artificial intelligence was used to study the daily behavior of villagers. He left because his family dreaded the pogroms against the Jews. He made a career in the West. He came back because in Russia, we think in Russian.
