JFK Assassination: What Happened in the Trauma Room?

To mark 60 years since the assassination of John F Kennedy, this feature-length documentary features a reunion involving seven doctors who were present in the Parkland Hospital emergency room on the day President John F Kennedy was rushed there after being shot. Decades later, they vividly recount their actions and observations from that fateful day, divulging unsettling medical details surrounding the assassination that raise doubts about the government investigations that found Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

N’Importe Quoi (for Brunhild)

...in this new film, the performativity of his subject - Brunhild Meyer-Ferrari is self-evident. Composer Brunhild Ferrari, born 1937 in Frankfurt a.M., Germany moved to Paris in 1959 where she would meet and marry the composer Luc Ferrari. Brunhild Meyer, who produced a number of works of radio art in the 70’s and 80’s for SWF, slowly began to emerge as a composer in the last decade (adopting her husband's surname only after his death). Luc Ferrari, was a pioneer of ‘Musique concrete’ and a founding member of Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM) with Pierre Schaeffer in Paris. Fowler’s film provides peripheral glimpses into their collaborative life and work but resists a traditional biographic narrative.

Achille in Sciro - CORSELLI

Thetis, mother of Achilles, disguises her son as a woman to hide him in the court of King Lycomedes of Scyros and prevent him being sent off to the Trojan War. The plan begins to come apart when Achilles, incapable of subduing his virility, falls in love with Princess Deidamia. Disguise and transvestism have been an essential part of opera plots from the Venetian origins of the genre. In line with this tradition, the story of Achilles on the Island of Scyros inspired more than 30 compositions for voice based on Metastasio’s libretto of 1737. The Italian composer Francesco Corselli was a key figure in Spanish opera of the 18th century. As Kapellmeister of the Royal Chapel of Madrid for nearly 30 years, he was the principal supplier of opera to the Spanish court. Some of these were under the artistic direction of the famous castrato Farinelli.

Lan's Garden

Lan’s Garden is about aging. Lan was once a proud matriarch who defined herself by her ability to care for her children. Now, the direction of care has been reversed: Lan’s children must come to take care of her and fix what she breaks. Lan is neither sick nor injured, and there is no dramatic plot point that leads to her downfall; she is simply growing old. If she suffers, it is only at the consequence of her own actions as she resists her gradual loss of agency. Every character in this film is a sympathetic one, and we take turns seeing Lan through each one’s eyes: the concerned daughter, the devoted son-in-law, the curious grandson. And then we are left with Lan, alone in her world.

Union Street

Interspersing interviews with archival footage, Union Street documents the history of Vancouver’s Hogan’s Alley, the formerly Black neighbourhood which was destroyed by the construction of the Georgia viaduct in the 1970s. This local history speaks to systemic racial injustice towards Vancouver’s Black community that has continued to this day. Revelatory conversations are had in the film surrounding the erasure of Black history in Canada, and the proliferation of hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan which had chapters in Vancouver. Histories of now-closed Black-owned businesses in Hogan’s Alley such as Vie’s Chicken and Steakhouse have inspired a new generation of Black business owners in the neighbourhood, and the Black Lives Matter movement has reinvigorated discussion surrounding the destruction, as well as the history and memory of Hogan’s Alley. Beautifully filmed, this visual portrait speaks to the legacies of the past, as well as the present moment.

RIP

RIP, Rollostraat 18 and Sixth Form Acid are all part of a series of ‘miniature’ films that Quaintance is continually producing. These short films are all under three minutes long and allow the filmmaker to explore a single formal or conceptual idea. The process of realisation can either be loose and improvisatory or time intensive and heavily edited. Each of the films uses either archival material, or footage Quaintance has shot using a DV of High 8 video camera. Using these mediums, instead of 16mm, allows for quicker production and a more intuitive approach.
