The Cambrian Coast: Machynlleth to Barmouth

Driver's Eye View: Machynlleth to Barmouth Narrated by Dafydd Hywel This driver's eye view manages to convey the sleepy backwater that the Cambrian Coast line is nowadays. Our class 150 "Sprinter" makes an unscheduled stop at Dovey Junction to pick up a couple of passengers deposited on this out-of-the-way station with no road access. Out onto the coast we encounter the most notorious section on the whole line - the narrowest of ledges cut into the sheer rockface of the Friog cliffs and the site of two disasters. Finally, there is the half-mile long timber trestle bridge at Barmouth, still standing in splendid isolation across the Mawddach estuary. Two other railways are featured en route, the Talyllyn narrow gauge railway at Tywyn and the Fairbourne and Barmouth Steam railway. Filmed in 1988.

Costa Rica: Child of the Wind

In war-torn Central America there is a country with no dictator and no army, a country at peace with itself and its neighbors. It is the oldest democracy in Latin America. This film explores the history of Costa Rica and the reasons it has been able to exist as a neutral country firmly committed to social welfare and free elections. Costa Ricans live without an army, preferring to invest their resources in hospitals and schools rather than machine guns and tanks. The film explores the issue of Costa Rica's neutrality in the face of its dependence on U.S. aid.

Red Dolls

In this study of the chauvanistic aspects of Moroccan culture, a young woman is forced to marry someone chosen for her (she has no say in the matter), and when he dies after leaving her with three children and his mother to care for, she is hard put to feed them and make ends meet. Her bleak existence is lightened for a moment by a sexual encounter with a stranger - and for that transgression, she will have to face the punishment meted out to women of loose morals. Although the story is set at the end of the 1950s, nothing at all has changed since then in village Morocco or in many other Arab societies, especially those where the fundamentalist movement has gained ascendency.

Ted Baryluk's Grocery

Ukrainian-Canadian Ted Baryluk's grocery store has been a fixture in Winnipeg's North End for over 20 years. In this photo study, Ted talks about his store, the customers who have come and gone and the social changes his multicultural neighbourhood has seen. But most of all he wonders what will become of his store after he retires. He hopes his daughter will take over, but she wants to move away. The film is a wistful rendering of a shopkeeper's relationship with his daughter and a fascinating portrait of a neighbourhood and its inhabitants.
