Birds of Tokyo - Broken Strings Tour

In 2009 Perth rockers Birds Of Tokyo came up with an idea to show Australian audiences a very different and unexpected side to the band. By stripping their music back to the barest framework then rebuilding it with acoustic based sounds and delicate orchestration, creating a sonic concept that showcased the complexity and depth in their music. It was with this sound that they took on the road enthralling audiences in sold out venues across the nation. Working closely with renowned producer, composer and long-time collaborator, Anthony Cormican, who had previously written and arranged strings on the band's Day One and gold-selling Universes. Wanting the experience to be more daring and involved than merely picking up acoustic guitars and brushes instead of running with amplifiers and drum sticks; the band performed with a host of instruments - from ukuleles to 12-string guitars specifically incorporating them into an ensemble of string quartet and grand pianist.

My long neck

Maja is proud of the 16 coils of brass around her neck that distinguish her as a ‘long neck’ Kayan woman from Burma. But after 20 years of living on display and constantly being photographed in a tourist village in Thailand, the rings are becoming more a trap than a source of pride. When a chance meeting with an Australian filmmaker puts a video camera in her hands, she decides to turn the lens around and make a film about what it means to live in a ‘human zoo’. The process turns her life on its head and forces her to choose between tradition and rebellion.

Hauntation

This film uses the data of digital photographs of the site of the Brownlie Towers in Bentley, Western Australia. This data was first captured digitally via a camera on-site and then the data of those files was projected onto analogue film which was then in turn returned to the digital space via a scanner. The scanner itself became a sight for further experimentation as the film was pulled through and moved at varying speeds. Similarly the audio was created from the data of the same photos.
