Daughters

Yoshiko loses her beloved cat. Upon discovering it, her neighbour Hotaru joins her in holding a quiet, heartfelt funeral. This small event becomes the catalyst for the family to come together once more. For their own reasons, Yoshiko's three daughters return to the family home one by one, resuming life under the same roof. During their time together, the initial distance and unspoken tensions slowly give way to understanding. Thirty years of misunderstandings begin to dissolve through shared daily moments: quiet conversations in the kitchen, silent gestures at the dining table, and afternoons spent tending the garden. Each ordinary act brings a renewed sense of warmth and connection.

The Sea Unseen

We see this when painfully shy protag Yoshino decamps from her isolated Tokyo life to visit the historic town of Ueda in Nagano Prefecture – so historic that complete fossils are found (!). While staying at a guest house that doubles as a theatre and cafe, she explores the scenic city and its surrounding countryside and learns from locals about their histories, the lay of the land, and the flow of time. Gradually, like the fossils that have come to light in the area, Yoshino’s spirit emerges from the dark as she reflects upon how the locals have changed her.

A UNESCO Global Geopark, the Oki Islands boast majestic natural beauty, but also serve as a politically charged symbol, with Japan asserting territorial claims over Dokdo, calling it, “Takeshima.” As Kim builds relationships with local residents and engages with their perspectives, he explores the histories, ecologies, and memories surrounding Dokdo and the Oki Islands.

Threads of Time

Anamizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, is located in the center of the Noto Peninsula. The population is below 7,000, and the town is in the final stage of population decline, with both young people and the elderly declining. Motoyuki Takii, a former junior high school teacher, lives in a marginal village on a rough road from the center of the town, which is promoting compact cities. Since 2020, he has been publishing a handwritten newspaper, "Tsumugu," and has been sounding the alarm about profit-driven policies and the town's future. The town's traditional fishing method, "Muramachi Yagura," overlooks the calm Anamizu Bay. Patience can be said to be a part of the townspeople's character, but Takii writes, "If we do nothing, nothing will change." The Ishikawa TV crew will highlight the raison d'être of local media through the eyes of the townspeople, highlighting the distorted relationship between the town hall and the town council, where inertia and favoritism are rampant.
