Roberta

Roberta Flack’s place in music history was assured when she became the first artist to win back-to-back Grammy Awards for Record of the Year with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (1973) and “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (1974). The depth and complexity of her lyrical and thematic choices, as well as the sophisticated mix of classical and soul influences on her style, all sprang from a woman who thoughtfully interrogated her role and identity throughout her life. Filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio has created a marvelous monument to a singular and unclassifiable musical genius, with commentary from contemporary artists whom she has inspired.

All Tomorrow's Parties

The story happened in 1990 when Beijing hosted the Asian Games. Zhou was someone who lived a normal life, taking care of her mom. She has a passion for her life, such as watching and donating to the Asian Games instead of buying Jeans. Li Mo was someone who didn't like his parents' arrangement (maybe to work at the factory). He likes writing poems and traveling. Something that was trending in China at that time but not being understood by many others. He had just completed his trip and had to go back to reality. He had that poet look at the beginning but cut it later on to show that he had moved on to his normal life. The two met. They shared some common and trivial things. They can potentially understand each other better and treat each other as friends.

Meanwhile in Lucavsala

A colorful and slightly comical portrait of a group of people and a snapshot of an era, telling the story of Lucavsala, a green oasis in the center of Riga. Unique in Europe, this allotment garden colony, located almost in the city center, brings together a wide variety of social groups: modern flower children, city dwellers caught up in their daily routines, organizers of spiritual festivals, homeless people, and pyromaniacs, whom the director contrasts with urban planners working in air-conditioned offices. Each of them strives to realize their dreams on the island, which are as contrasting as the characters in the film themselves.

Backlash: Misogyny in the Digital Age

This documentary by Léa Clermont-Dion and Guylaine Maroist plunges us into the vortex of online misogyny and documents hatred towards women. This bleak opus, reminiscent of a psychological thriller, follows four women across two continents: former President of the Italian parliament Laura Boldrini, former Democratic representative Kiah Morris, French actor and YouTuber Marion Séclin, and Donna Zuckerberg, a specialist in online violence against women and the sister of Facebook’s founder. This tour de force reveals the devastating effects such unapologetic hatred has on victims, and brings to light the singular objective of cyber-misogyny: to silence women who shine. Some targets of cyber-violence will crumble under the crystallizing force of the click. Others, proud warriors, will stand tall and refuse to be silenced.

La fille du régiment - Donizetti

Glorious comedy and impeccable coloratura combine in Donzetti’s La fille du régiment, incarnated by Marie, the feisty tomboy raised by a regiment of French soldiers. What can stand in the path of true love for Tonio is the young Swiss villager who conquers her heart - and nails a few high Cs on the way? Director Luis Ernesto Doñas sets the action in central America, turning the revolutionary French fighting against conservative Tyrol into the struggle for Cuban liberation. Cuba as a place where two worlds confront and clash, a colourful one projected into the future and the other in black and white locked in nostalgic feelings about the past.
