Filmed in museums and in the Cambridge University labs where Whitehead had been a student, THE PERCEPTION OF LIFE was filmed through microscopes used by scientists from the 17th to the 20th centuries, including the electron microscope in the MRC unit where Francis Crick and James Watson discovered the structure of DNA.

In his play, Ted Willis deals with the so-called hooligan problem: Mandy Tullis, a young girl from London whose father has died, loves the member of a youth gang, the cynical-brutal Tago Martin, who has always narrowly escaped prison to escape. "Boss" of the gang is the failed student Alan, son of rich parents. One day at a meeting in the hangout, the young soldier Frank Morgan, an acquaintance of the family, appears to bring Mandy, whom he loves, out of the unpleasant environment and to bring her home. The gang reacts brutally, beating up Frank and throwing him into the street. However, the boys are observed and reported.

To prove herself, she follows him, first to a school dance in a borrowed gown, then to a year’s stint on a remote oil‐plant construction in Granow. Ostracized at first, she wins respect under FDJ secretary Anton by mastering every trade and helping him study for engineering school. After returning to Berlin, she discovers Peter’s infidelity and, disillusioned, goes back to Granow, finding true partnership and purpose with Anton.

A work commissioned by the Ministry of Labour to which Mangini brings an eloquence that transcends any propaganda ambition. It is an accurate portrait of a vision about a land of new highways and factories built on the grounds of shepherds and farmers.

This film was made by punching circular holes into fully opaque film stock and laying discs of colour film into some of the punched holes. Only the original copy of this film exists – it cannot be printed and is therefore projected only on rare occasions. As with other Le Grice films from the late 1960s, Spot the Microdot is marked by a radical rejection of ‘illusionism’, choosing to focus instead on the material properties of the film medium itself.

The film touches upon all the hot-button issues of 1968: illegal immigrants from the Eastern bloc, the Prague Spring, the Italian star cult and even abortion.

Story of two young people: Andrea and Christian, called Krischan. The movie and their adventure begins when they enter an old town by the sea: Stralsund. The young people will experience many a surprise, and the real adventure is a journey of discovery for both of them; they want to find out what motivates the other, what goals they have and which character traits dominate. This also brings them face to face with the past, for example when Klein-Christian ate from Master Zillmann's liverwurst tree and was abandoned by the Snow Queen Luise, who had a heart of stone. Or Krischan meets Little Andrea, who always gnawed at her pigtails because she was afraid of her cheeky Uncle Albert. But now the two are turned towards the present and the future, and their behavior shows that their young love will last.
