Weeding

Three directors prepare a film about the chemical factory in the Cologne district of Kalk, on whose former grounds a shopping mall has been built. With some self-mockery they talk about their investigation and search for sources, their capitulation to the resistance of the material. Meanwhile, an archivist struggles with a mis-spooled 16mm film. Historical images splutter across the monitor of his analogue editing table. The silhouette of the factory with its towering chimneys is discernible. Site plans are shown, chemicals are blithely mixed. In an album, the filmmakers discover faded photos of female forced labourers. Suddenly, questions arise: Which stories are kept, which forgotten? Throwing away is part of his job, after all, the archivist explains in the finest Rhenish accent. What does this statement mean for the directing trio?

David Brewis: The Soft Struggles

In May, Field Music’s David Brewis brought a ten-piece band to the Howard Assembly Room to perform his new album The Soft Struggles. All-acoustic and jazz-inflected, The Soft Struggles takes one step away from Field Music’s eclectic palette and instead leans into the luminous spontaneity of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and the breathy, string-laden chamber pop of Colin Blunstone’s One Year, with several tracks built around a single day of live recording at Field Music’s studio in Sunderland. The ensemble featured Admiral Fallow’s Sarah Hayes on flute and piano, leading lights of North East jazz, Faye MacCalman and John Pope, on saxophone/clarinet and double bass, strings from regular collaborators The Crude Tarmac Quartet, Alan Hull, award-winning singer Eve Cole and David’s brother Peter on drums.

HEMA: A Story of Castellieri

Before the foundation of Trieste, the lands of the Caput Adriae were already inhabited by our ancestors, the population of the castellieri. Hema is a joung girl who lives in the Iron Age in the castelliere of Elleri and like all children of all times she becomes attached to a small animal that she finds occasionaly. The father, a salt merchant, becomes the protagonist of a sad ritual that Hema, in a sort of game, will imitate. But a parallelism to the present day sees another little girl similar to Hema, who, being on an educational trip to the same hillford, accidentally brings to light an artifact that will evoke an emotional bond with the past. Present in every era the figure of a bird of prey who supervises the human events around the castelliere from above.

String Therapy

In this surreal realm, the spinning of the “thread of life” has evolved into a strange therapeutic spinning circle where the personal and bodily connections between the characters become the very machine that spins the thread. Rather than perceiving destiny as a large unfathomable matter, the characters connect it to the bodily experience of labor, birth, genetic inheritance and the spinning itself as a structure that provides the opportunity for change and transformation over time.

Spinning

A comparison between animation and continuous motion, Spinning uses various filming speeds in relation to the performing body, and with reference to a memory of Wonder Woman. One continuous physical rotation at the rate of 8fps motion equals one second of time and yields 8 separate film frames. Stop motion is then applied, such that the figure does not spin but rather is repositioned across eight, then four, and finally two poses. Upon projection, the film reconstitutes the impression of a continuous action, while the multiple simultaneous perspectives evoke Cubism.
