Billionaires Gnaw Their Tongues from the Pain

Billionaires Gnaw Their Tongues from the Pain aka Lost Leaders #22 is a handmade short film created in collaboration with sound artist Jackie Gallant. Billionaires… combines 16mm and 35mm found footage, hand-woven elements and DIY frame-by-frame scanning using a Lego-modded lightbox. The film is “inspired” by the hideous spectacle of the richest men in the world pretending to be astronauts. It takes a fuck-ton of hubris to strut around like latter day space “pioneers” while the world burns.

Apollo/ Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux/ Dances at a Gathering

The rich history of American ballet is celebrated in classic works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, two choreographic giants of the 20th century. Apollo brought Balanchine together for the first time with composer Igor Stravinsky. Their creation for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1928 remains a masterpiece of neoclassicism in its striking depiction of the young god of music and his three muses. Balanchine’s effervescent Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux breathes life into a long-lost movement from Tchaikovsky’s original score for Swan Lake. Created in 1960 for virtuoso New York City Ballet dancers Violette Verdy and Conrad Ludlow, its thrilling technical challenges are still relished by performers today.

Aureole

In meteorology, the aureole is an atmospheric, optical phenomenon; the visible inner disc of a corona, produced by the diffraction of light from the sun or the moon, bright starlight or planet-light. ‘Aureole’ brings together unused celestial images from Scott’s earlier film, ‘Diviner’ (2017), with vocoder-readings from Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’ (1969), scored by Chu-Li Shewring’s remix of the House track ‘Brighter Days’ (1992) by Cajmere featuring Dajae. ‘Aureole’ is a transition between a lost chapter from ‘Diviner’ and ‘Wendy’ (2022, forthcoming), a film fan-letter to composer Wendy Carlos, whose many interests include solar eclipse photography. Accelerating to a euphoric end, the film is the duration of the longest total solar eclipse, when the moon completely covers the sun.

After one, humiliating rejection, he again must make amends on the canvas. Robert's world is upended when his estranged nephew and nephew's girlfriend, Thomas and Daniella, pay him an unexpected visit. A visit, choreographed by Daniella, to steal Robert's inherited wealth. While reconciling lost memories, he discovers their ulterior motive, and is subjected to his propensities. Bound literally by the circumstances, Daniella and Thomas are forced to participate in Robert's torturous performance. Ultimately, they break free from their misery, and commandeer a lifetime of wealth. Robert is left with his masterpiece ending.

Unborn

In Unborn we follow the internal monologue of a hybrid pigeon-persona who questions her inevitable cursed fate of parenthood. As a pigeon, she is supposed to build a nest to lay her eggs, but she fundamentally doubts her part in the cycle of life. Several absurd scenes show her struggle with popular belief, and nightmarish fantasies around the trappings of parenthood, and indirectly address reproductive rights without perpetuating the polarising perspective present in ongoing public debate. The spell-like remarks of the crow could be seen as her conscience echoing society’s expectations around reproduction. The presence of the egg as a haunted object with magical properties in this film becomes an unsettling interpretation of (in)fertility as a curse. The video incorporates various digital and hand-made techniques like stop-motion animation, set design, sound design and performance to unfold an uncanny world.

Klimax

Our main protagonist, Barbie, goes through a process of transformation. She emerges like Alice in Wonderland into a magical world, a place of temptation and joy. It is a fantastic place that makes her change little by little to get rid of her stiffness and repression. She passes through several different phases, melting away with exhilaration until she reaches her climax - an implicit orgasm - becomes a liquid magic gel. In this process, eroticism is not created by explicit pictures, but by associative images and movement.

Earthrise

With our planet positioned at the forefront of the global agenda more than ever before, ‘Earthrise’ explores the splendour of this blue body we call home by circling towards the amalgamated awareness to maintain the grandeur of the turning sphere we traverse along. In parallel to Van Herpen’s drive towards an interconnected approach to fashion, the 19 look collection narrates the circular processes that usher change in our sentient world by weaving a symbiotic thread between artisanal tailoring and organic craftsmanship, derived from the perception of our world as one living and breathing organism.
