Make Hummus Not War

Filmmaker Trevor Graham is an Australian 'hummus tragic'. Every week in his Bondi Beach home he observes the hummus making ritual, mashing chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic and tahina. But when the Hummus War erupted in 2008, among the usual suspects, Israel, Lebanon and Palestine, Graham was hungry for more. But this war ha no soldiers, bullets or tanks. Just chickpeas and hummus. Make Hummus Not War is a humorous homage to the chickpea's most distinguished dish. But there's a personal story, how Graham became a hummus tragic, a father who served in Palestine during WW2 and two lovers in his life, one Syrian, one Jewish, with whom he shared a great culinary passion.

RHLSTP Kickstarter DVD

"This is the most self indulgent thing I have ever done', says Richard Herring as he bounds on to the familiar stage of the Leicester Square Theatre. And who are we to argue - for the guest on this week's show is none other than Richard himself. With a combination of swagger and poor camera tricks we will finally get to see what makes the mysterious Herring tick. This DVD is a document to the kindness of the 2000 contributors to our recent KickStarter campaign to film every episode of the 8th series of Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast. It's also a joke that has got out of hand. As well as the hour long special RHLSTP with Rich, there's a backstage tour of the Leicester Square Theatre, every backstage interview from series 7, and hidden somewhere amongst the rushes is a short video of Rich before the camera trickery was added. He doesn't look very well.

A Very Dangerous Doctor

A Very Dangerous Doctor explores one of the longest-running, most emotionally charged battles in British medical history. In one corner, a pioneering doctor who dared to accuse mothers of abusing their own children. In the other corner are the mothers who counter-claim that the doctor was the abuser; using his power so that he could research on the children to test his own medical theories. With unprecedented access to both sides of the story, this authored documentary, by Bafta award-winning film-maker Leo Regan, explores the controversy surrounding paediatrician Dr David Southall and a group of mothers, who he accused of abusing their children. Filmed over two years, Regan gets to the heart of the war between doctors and mothers and tries to find out who is telling the truth.

People I Could Have Been and Maybe Am

Entirely shot on a mobile phone, the film evolved from chance encounters in the streets of London: Sandrine, an attractive young woman on a mission to find a husband, Steve, a seasoned beggar, struggling with addiction and and Steve's girlfriend Precious, a poet. Blurring the confines between fact and fiction. the film raises questions about the relationship between filmed and filmmaker. The closer he gets to his subjects, the more the obstruction of his camera seems to distance him from them. Ultimately People... reveals a personal and humane space that only came into existence precisely because it had been filmed.

Royal Opera House: Boris Godunov

Mussorgsky was inspired to compose his masterpiece Boris Godunov after reading Pushkin’s Shakespeare-inspired play of the same name. It features one of the most dramatically rewarding bass-baritone roles: a noble ruler who loves his children and his people, but whose thirst for power has led him to commit a terrible crime. Bryn Terfel is “a powerful new Boris” (The Observer) in Richard Jones’ new production of the original 1869 score. Antonio Pappano conducts an outstanding cast that also includes John Graham-Hall as the crafty Prince Shuisky and John Tomlinson as the vagabond monk Varlaam.

Bad Weather

Off the coast of Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal is a tiny 'brothel island' populated by women forced to sell their bodies to men who arrive by the boatload. Each of the women came to inhabit the 100m long and 10m wide piece of land for different reasons, whether through a sister, the need for money, or in search of love and affection, but for all of them it is a life tougher than they could have imagined. Deepening their troubles is the island's existence at the frontline of climate change, and with the increase of cyclones, floods and soil erosion the prospect of losing their homes, and the island itself, is closer than ever. Beautifully shot and subverting expectation, Bad Weather is a documentary that carves out a message of hope in extreme adversity.
