Veio

“I had no idea what I would find when we decided to fly to the distant state of Sergipe,” says director André Lion, who traveled to northeastern Brazil to document the life and work of a small-town artist called Veio. “Despite being a huge admirer of his work, my contact with Veio had only been by telephone. Also, my anxiety about the trip was forged by the false idea that we must have control over everything—a state of mind imposed on us by big cities. But I set this aside and ended up embarking on one of my most pleasant documentary experiences.” Veio is a short film that immerses the audience into the isolated universe of a self-taught artist who looks to nature to guide his work and philosophy. Veio spent much of his formative years in the company of adults, gradually developing an interest in bygone eras and the recent past. This earned him the nickname Veio—meaning ‘old’ in Portuguese.

Inside the Mind of Robert Burns

Writer Alan Bissett explores the complex brain of Robert Burns in a quest to discover the real man behind the myths and reveal the conflicts in his life and work. Burns was a poetic genius, but full of contradictions. He was a lover of women, and an exploiter of them; a Republican firebrand, and a social-climbing government excise man; an advocate of freedom who almost became a Caribbean slave master. Alan examines the groundbreaking research that suggests that the poet suffered from bi-polar disorder, a condition that led him to have severe mood swings.

Unearthing Nazca: The Complete Story

In Spring of 2017, researchers began a scientific inquiry into the origins of six, three-fingered mummies found in Nazca, Peru. Preliminary results from tests performed on the largest mummy's anomalous hands, cross-examined against the rest of the body, revealed no evidence to indicate a hoax. Scientists found the largest mummy, Maria, to be female and carbon dated her at roughly 1,700 years old. The tedious work of placing the mummies' DNA in our fossil record, comparing it to modern and ancient humans has begun.

Scenes from the Blackjewel Miners Blockade

In July of 2019 the Blackjewel coal company announced it was declaring bankruptcy. Miners were told to stop working mid shift, and their last paychecks bounced. The miners retaliated by blocking a train full of coal, camping out on the coal tracks for weeks. Queer regional organizers made their way to the encampment to support the miners. The encampment became a place for community gathering and mutual aid distribution. Sarah Moyer, a film maker living in Kentucky, also made their way to the encampment and filmed this short documentary on the blockade. (Summary from Queer Appalachia)

Hitler's Defeat: Victory Against All Odds

This is the journey of British people's courage, resourcefulness and 'Keep Calm and Carry On' attitude led to victory in the fight against Hitler. The outbreak of war meant that social and cultural norms were turned upside-down: women willingly stepped up to the essential war work, whilst also dealing with the heartbreak of evacuation, the terror and loss of the bombing raids of the Blitz, as well as the heavy burden of their menfolk being at war. Laughter and music, dates, dances and weddings plus the American GIs, helped the British people through the darkness. This indomitable spirit on the Home Front boosted troops' morale as they faced down the enemy bringing victory for the allies against all odds.

The Beloved

Commune or cult? This epic documentary illuminates the Rajneesh sannyasin movement in 1980s Fremantle, as told by those who lived through it. If you lived in the Fremantle of the early 1980s, it was not uncommon to see the so-called “Orange People”: members of the Rajneesh sannyasin commune. Surrendering themselves to the spiritual guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, adherents were promised enlightenment and revolution, but required to live by significantly modified social structures and identities. Like so many living experiments dedicated to a higher consciousness, the movement seemed to have all the trappings of a cult – and its notoriety has lingered in the city in the four decades since.
