Take Me to Pemberley

"Mr. Darcy: The synonym for the romantic hero since 1813, as he first appeared in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. The book had several movie adaptations (especially prominent [were those from] 1940, 1995 and 2005), which not only inscribe Darcy’s character in popular culture, but also illustrate our capitalist notions of love and desire, as well as a wish for escapism into a pre-industrialized, pre-virtualized world. I, too, fell for Mr. Darcy. Thanks to my webcam and Photo Booth, I can finally have my go [at] winning him over." (Daniela Zahlner)

This Lemon Tastes of Apple

Lemons are being passed around. Their juice relieves the burning in the mouth and nose. It is April 17, 2011, the last day of public revolt before the suppression of the Iraqi Spring. Amid the protesting crowd, breathing the air laced with tear gas, are two musicians: Hiwa K with his harmonica, Daroon Othman on the guitar. They play the movie score from "Once Upon a Time in the West", that alarming melody of two dissonant notes, immediately recognizable to everyone in the streets of Sulaimany, Kurdistan. As Hiwa K plays the harmonica, the tear gas invades his airways; music and the political situation coincide in the performer’s body. He subsequently compiled video footage shot by others in the documentary This Lemon Tastes of Apple. The title ties the events of 2011 back to Saddam Hussein’s genocidal campaign against the Kurds in 1988. The gas that was used back then smelled of apples.

Pioniere der Lüfte – Nonstop über den Atlantik

Ever since man invented the flying machine, it has been the dream of daredevil pilots to cross the Atlantic non-stop. Daredevil men and women in their rattling boxes risk their lives for it. The first successful transatlantic flight took place 100 years ago. The documentary by Radio Bremen and rbb recalls the daring and technical ingenuity of crossing the Atlantic by plane, looks back over 100 years of aviation history, tells of adventurous flight attempts, magnificent achievements and records, acclaimed heroes of the skies, but also of setbacks and disasters. "Pioneers of the skies - non-stop across the Atlantic" shows rare original documents - particularly impressive: original pictures of the first transatlantic flight of the R34 flying ship in 1919.

Sabaudia

Sabaudia in Italy, created by Mussolini’s architects as a model “new fascist city”, was supplied with extensive farm lands converted from marshes. Yet, despite its undeniably “brutal” architecture, creators including Alberto Moravia and Pier Paolo Pasolini subsequently found Sabaudia to be a wonderful, hospitable place – the sign of a genuine, traditional Italy, and its resistance to all modern ideologies. Lotte Schreiber constructs a multi-faceted, documentary view of Sabaudia, inspired by but going beyond Pasolini, portraying it as a paradoxical mixture of social class separation, nostalgia, and everyday whimsy. Silver Girls

This documentary tells the story of three grandmothers who earn a living as prostitutes. Christel, Paula and Karolina either work in their own apartment, in a brothel, or receive clients at a dominatrix studio. They have no desire to justify what they do, nor do they make a show of their profession. These three women are engaged in a constant merry-go-round of slipping into different identities, selling dreams and trying to manage their own private life. Their multifaceted personalities make it clear just how differently they go about their trade, and what made them choose to earn their bread as a sex worker. The film provides an insight in to the lives of Christel, Paula and Karolina and their sometimes surprisingly middle-class routine.

Blickwechsel - Perspectives on German volunteers

Every year more than 3000 mostly young Germans travel to Africa in order to complete a voluntary service of several months in an organization or in a project. The motivation of the travelers is different. It is mostly their personal experiences, stories and reports that shape the public image of volunteer services in Africa. But what do the guides on site think about the coming and going of the German guests? What visible and invisible traces do volunteers leave behind in the projects from the perspective of people living on site? In the perspective-rich documentation, people in South Africa, Ghana and Gambia describe their perspectives and experiences with German volunteers. An exciting film about the diversity and complexity of encounters in context of voluntary service.
