Zinzindurrunkarratz

Zinzindurrunkarratz, third feature film by Oskar Alegria (Emak Bakia baita, Zumiriki), summarizes in its title the idea it pursues: the role of sound in the construction of our memories and our memory. Zinzin is a valley where the wind blows lightly and its lyrics represent that sound in Basque language. Durrundurrun is a chasm without end, where a falling stone is lost in that long echo, and Kurruzkarratz, is the peak where lightning always strikes, with its roar and tear full of R’s.

After the recent closure of the Carrio well, a symbol of the end of an industry that has marked the character of a town, Barredos faces depopulation and oblivion. However, the testimonies of those who are still alive and the photographic material from the mid-20th century by Corsino García Alonso, a local photographer and grandfather of the author, manage to show that the memory still endures. The stories of its heyday told orally and visually and its characters intertwine and contrast with a current declining, empty post-industrial landscape.

Saharawi women have always been at the forefront of the resistance against colonialism and the plunder of their territory by Morocco. In spite of Morocco’s repression, intensified by the collapse of the ceasefire with the Polisario Front in November 2020, activists living under occupation gathered to document the violence perpetrated against their daughters, mothers, sisters and grandmothers since 1975. This documentary explores this historical process through the voices of its protagonists in their triple roles as victims, researchers, and international activists. A sensitive and close analysis of these experiences is complemented by animations and statistics little known to the general public. The result is an astonishing record of the gravity and extent of the violence exercised by Morocco against women, but also a photograph of colonialism from a gender perspective that emphasizes the unwavering strength of these activists to fight for their people’s rights.
