Without This World

World, that is for the followers of a small Mennonite community in Argentina, all that is outside, beyond their community, where the "worldmen" live. Their everyday life is determined by an attempt to ward off everything modern, a life without electricity, machines and communicative media, a school whose only books are the Bible and the Catechism. Nora Fingscheidt takes this life in the eye and lets it be told by those who live it - in different degrees of devotion. In the process, it is not least apparent how a life-style, which has devoted itself entirely to the departure from this "world," is formed around it. And then, between the pictures and the words, a gap opens, in which the longing for a more destitute life, as well as the fear of a sad departure, becomes perceptible.

Ober Ost: The Forgotten Colony in the Heart of Europe

While the First World War and its battles on the Western Front are still very much anchored in our memory of history, the simultaneous battle in the East appears now to have been largely forgotten. During the course of this military action, a peculiar, state-like entity was created, a German colony in Eastern Europe, a military utopia: the Land of Ober Ost. The occupied region was to become a productive state, completely under military command; a state that was to serve not least as a deployment zone for the impending war.

Farewell to the Parents

The film is based on the eponymous 1960 novel by author Peter Weiss. In this autobiographical text, the author describes the years of his childhood and youth in Germany in the 20s and 30s as well as the flight of his half-Jewish family from persecution by the Nazis. This odyssey also portrays the young first-person narrator’s struggle for his artistic existence, as he was striving to establish himself as a painter and writer. In a free, sensual essay between fiction and document, realistic description and stylised invention, the film attempts to kindle today’s flame based on the past’s, and to create a new and vibrant third work from it. Concerned Travelers

Concerned Travelers is set on Lesbos during the last weeks before the EU-Turkey agreement came into effect in early 2016. One Million people reached Europe by sea in 2015 and almost half of them arrived on the beaches of Lesbos. The film follows migrants who arrive on Lesbos, before they move with a ferry to the Greek mainland and continue to travel north to central Europe. With the influx of migrants on the Greek Island, tourism came to a sudden halt and changed the livelihood of many islanders profoundly. Tourists who discuss their concerns in online travel forums regarding the crisis create the tone for this short documentary narrated by an omniscient observer. Concerned Travelers is shot in non-interventional, observational direct cinema style.
