Helium

"Helium is, effectively, a response to my last year of being remarkably out of touch with my own body and sexuality and finding a lack of basic joy in things. Through this period, I became further obsessed with competitive bodybuilding, as well as discovered the balloon fetish community. This has resulted in a deep fascination as well as jealousy, and I am gazing at both communities with rapt curiosity. In my current state, I am thrilled that people not only find fulfillment and joy in activity I view as marginally futile, but can also derive such intense pleasure from otherwise innocuous objects."

Beautiful Accidents

With its unique blend of romance, satire, and playful blurring of fact and fiction, Beautiful Accidents is about a madcap indie film crew shooting a cheesy rom-com. The film-within-a-film concerns Henry, a young man who invites his girlfriend Charlotte to his family cottage for the winter holidays. As a surprise for Charlotte, Henry also invites his eccentric mother Sally and Charlotte's overbearing father Gordon. The surprise, however, is the truth about Sally and Gordon. Hilarity, the occasional tender moment, and the promises and pitfalls of filmmaking ensue as all try to keep their various secrets from being spilled.

Domestic Bees

Usually it’s not a good sign when a film opens with death walking in the door; however, in this wry short, the appearance of the Grim Reaper (who exits again as quickly as he arrived) is just one of several intersecting stories that unfold within the hive-like confines of the film’s tranquil universe. Deftly playing with narrative structure – while challenging the viewer to keep up – “Les Abeilles domestiques” is a masterful exercise in “deconstruction” that’s both extremely clever and highly entertaining.

CHICK FLICK

CHICK FLICK (2017) is a site-specific installation by collaborating artists: Lisa g Nielsen, Cheryl Hamilton & Rose Casella. The three artists created the work while in residence at the Falaise Fieldhouse over the entire month of July 2017 - and then share their finished installation on Saturday July 29th from 9:00pm-1am at 3434 Falaise Avenue, Vancouver BC Canada. This is part of the Iris Film Collective IN HOUSE series. Using found 16mm footage that has women as subject (unsurprisingly limited on ebay) this collaborative team transformed the footage (and fieldhouse) into something that speaks more authentically to the female experience. Titles such as: Jobs for Women - 1942, Volleyball Technique for Girls - 1957 & Correctol Women's Laxative Commercial - 1960's will experience a mash-up as the artists explore the woman’s place.

VI.SION

Vi.sion is the product of an encounter between an expanding ballet troupe and an abandoned school with a marvelous theater, which was to be demolished to make way for a parking lot. It is the home of a place, imbued with memories of a rich and proud past, by the footsteps of a young troop. The time is getting confused. The present and the past blend together and it is the old school that dances with the passion and passion of young dancers. Ghosts, shadows, specters ... They bewitch.

How Flowers Never Became A Food Group

A poetic and fragmented construction of images and text suggests failure and disillusion about romanticism. Intense psychedelic colours characterize images of flowers, as if they were struggling while maintaining a playful tone. Feelings of ambiguity are evoked, oscillating between the notions of the possible and the impossible, as well as attraction and repulsion. The project is an audiovisual collaboration with experimental musician Alain Lefebvre.

BGL Fancy

After a twenty-year-long career, the contemporary art group BGL (Jasmin Bilodeau, Sébastien Giguère and Nicolas Laverdière) are offered a wonderful and colossal challenge. In a short period of time, they are to create and oversee two monumental public art pieces – one in Montréal and the other in Toronto – and represent Canada during the 56th Biennale in Venice. What better moment than to shine the spotlight on this immensely creative trio and allowing us to take a retrospective look on their prolific and disconcerting legacy. This fairy-tale like documentary, entangles humour, extravagance, oneirism and camaraderie.

Domestic Trick #4

"This film was made for an exhibition with the theme of magic. At the time, my son was 4 months old and I was spending a significant amount of time at home. Working under this circumstance, which I viewed as a convenience and a constraint, I made work that utilized and reconsidered the manufactured purpose of objects that I found in or near our apartment. In this case: a light bulb, microwave, mason jar, and a bath towel. I brought these objects together in an attempt to create a sense of self-entertainment through the production of a homemade magic show or no-frills special effect."

This is Parkdale

In the summer of 2017, in the Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale, over 300 tenants living across 12 apartment buildings went on rent strike to protest a wave of rent increases that would have displaced members of their community. Through months of organizing and a series of escalating actions, working-class people took on the biggest corporate landlord in their neighbourhood… and won. In an age where gentrification is rapidly transforming the nature and demographics of working-class neighbourhoods in cities across the world, pushing out poorer tenants, people on fixed incomes, immigrant communities and other long-term residents, the story of the Parkdale rent strike offers an important and practical lesson on how we can organize with our neighbours to fight back.
