The City in the Water

There's a man aged 93 years. He was born in the "City in the water" and lived there all his 90-plus years. You can see him always sitting under the zelkova tree beside the lake. However, he doesn't look at the beautiful lake. Instead, he looks the opposite side, where hills, walls and roads are. There's a quizzical eye of a man, observing him. One year passes. Seasons change. One day, the old man stares at a certain point in the lake, for the first as well as the last time. That was the location where the house he had been born in was. And he happens to get hospitalized soon afterwards. Then the exploration of the 'City in the water' began based on the old man's story.

Over time, these representations fractured, faded, and reemerged, leaving silences in the archive and gaps in visibility. The cut-out fragments from the scattered information are pieced together to imagine the child’s unspoken point of view throughout his wandering life.

He’s made 101 films since he made his debut in 1962 with Farewell Doman River. He tasted the glory at Cannes Int’l Film Festival with Chiwhasun. However making the 102nd film seems harder than ever to this 80-year-old director. His 2 projects have been suspended. He still can’t find chance to make his 102nd film, but spends daily routine free from film-making. This is a recording of years that the film-maker spends without making a film.

After came back to the office from the work, suddenly Bong Ju was defending for Alvin when Bong Ju saw that furious home owner couple was suspecting Alvin for the stolen necklace obviously. After home owner couple left, Alvin was criticized about this happening by co-workers. Bong Ju took Alving out of that place showing his angry toward co-workers. Co-workers thought Bong Ju seemed very odd because he supported Alvin for no reason. Alvin said "I have something to say" to Bong Ju as he saw Bong Ju's reaction. Many trekkers visit Oze, a wetland with breathtaking scenery. However, having a long and severe winter, the mountain lodges in Oze are only open from May to October. Vehicles are unable to pass through the wetlands; “botcah” (the traditional carriers manually transporting luggage), who carry packages of food and other materials on foot, are the only ones who can get to the lodges. Speed of Happiness sends respect to the botcah who have embodied values learned while walking every day and humbly accompany their daily lives. Walking along at the pace of each botcah, the film gazes at calluses, smiles, hardships, endurance, and hope. The solidity of their lives in Oze pounds our hearts and the taste of each season touches our skin.

A thoughtful young man ambles around the Han River, providing an expansive setting for his contemplations. Another lost soul is on this bridge, a man with a guitar asks for a light and a song. Soon the young man’s problems are put into context, when arguments about umbrellas seem to fade into meaninglessness.
