In Search of the Dragon's Tale

Follows the story of a handicapped street musician, Maurice Chan, as he explains what life is like for him in Hong Kong. In the process we go on a journey back in time to the Walled City of Kowloon. Once dubbed the 'sleaziest' place in Hong Kong, it was an island of Chinese sovereignty within the British colony. As a result of a secret political compromise between the Chinese and British Governments the Walled City was destroyed in 1992. This decision resulted in the displacement of the Walled City's 40,000 residents. The documentary gives the story of modern day Hong Kong from a personal viewpoint and shows historical links to a place the authorities preferred to forget.

The 1960s For Me

Drawing inspiration from the sounds, instruments, style, texture, mixing and record back spinning of 1960s pop music, modern sampling methods is used to re-present, synthesize and “musicify” the content of Ya Si’s poems. It also references the line from Bob Dylan’s 1960s classic Blowin’ In The Wind, “The answer is blowin’ in the wind”, to correspond to the line in Ya Si’s poem that pays tribute to the song. This is recited in a recording by singer-songwriter Jing Wong.

Tra(i)nsient

We see the world through a train window in Tra(i)nsient. Anson Mak captures the fleeting scenes that rush by: images of trees, buildings, power lines, rolling hills, and neighbourhoods, from sunrise through daytime to nightfall. Shot on a Super 8 camera, the video has a particularly grainy quality as light fluctuates over the course of a day. For the majority of the nearly twelve-minute piece, we hear the sound of falling rain and the clamouring of train wheels against the tracks; the viewpoint then shifts to a straight shot of Hong Kong, with the soundtrack changing to white noise. In the final moments, the film cuts to silent darkness. (From mplus.org.hk)
