I Didn't Cross the Border: The Border Crossed Me

The villagers of Churvaleti knew since the end of the Georgian war in 2008 that they were living on a border. Life was simple, but not far from normal. Until a while ago, when Russian patrols started drawing the borderline and putting up barbed wire fences. In Churvaleti, the barbed wire fence goes right through the village. Families and communities got divided. Every other hour border patrols pass by and put anyone in captivity who come close to the fence. In spite of this menace, the villagers find ways to stay in touch with their relatives and friends across the line. Life goes on, but will it ever be the same again?

Thinking like a Mountain

The Arhuacos are the guardians of the forest and the ice of Colombia highest mountain, the Sierra Nevada Santa Marta. They draw from this unique environment a preserved and singular spirituality. For the first time a director was invited to visit the heartland of the sacred mountain. Hick tells the story of resistance which is a voyage through space and time: from the shores of the Caribbean to the stars that light up the night on the glacier and from the encounter with the first colonizing whites to the return of the warriors following FARC's laying-down of arms.

Do Not Track

Somehow everyone knows that you reveal everything about yourself on the internet - where you are, what you are interested in, who you communicate with, when, where and how. The interactive documentary shows what the internet knows about us, what happens to our data and what this means for our view of the world. The 30-minute television version presents the highlights of the web documentary series about the multi-billion dollar business with our data. The international web project 'Do Not Track' shows the consequences of internet tracking (derived from the English 'to track'), which companies such as Google and Deutsche Telekom use to monitor when and where we click on which online content. Google alone earns an estimated 55.5 billion US dollars per year from this information.

The Second Attack

As a child Ibrahim Arslan survived the arson attack on his parents’ home in Mölln in which three members of his family were killed. Today he says that his family suffered not just one, but two attacks. After the Molotov cocktails had burnt out, the Arslan family became a target of attacks again, this time coming from the media, politics and society. These attacks were worse than the incendiary devices because they could have been avoided, Arslan says. In her film, Mala Reinhardt asks why even today many victims of radical right-wing violence are forced to live through the same experience of being treated with hostility and criminalised. The victims, who have formed a network, analyse with impressive clarity which conditions make racism still socially acceptable in our country. The essential thing now is to listen to them. The Unstable Object

What do a luxury automobile, a cymbal, and a wall clock all have in common? What are the diverse attachments and experiences produced by those who make these things and those who consume them? What exchanges take place through the object itself—sensually, esthetically, abstractly? We often forget that most of the things we use are made by the labor of others, often in distant places, living dramatically different, diverse lives. What do these objects mean to them? How does their labor, their aspirations, their sense of alienation or satisfaction connect to ours?

Der "Schwulenparagraf" – Geschichte einer Verfolgung

They were called "the 175s". These men were sometimes arrested while making love, often at work, or the police picked them up from home. A few hours later, they were often already in custody, and it was usually not long before they were dismissed by their employer. Their crime: consensual sex between adult men. This was a violation of Paragraph 175, which stated that "unnatural fornication committed between persons of the male sex" was punishable by imprisonment. This is what the German Criminal Code said when it was introduced in 1871.

Halmaspiel

A collage of associations evoked by finds. One’s family, three different Germanys including their insidious subchapters, the taste of life. The mother used to be a passionate Chinese checkers player. On the one hand. On the other she was a tailor and fashion designer in the GDR. Her journeyman’s piece: a showpiece with piping, cording, tabs and embroidery around the neckline. One has to love this film, if only for the tender re-animation of these words we presumed obsolete. And for everything else!

[ˈdʊŋkl̩ˌdɔɪ̯ʧlant]

The film transports us from the inside of an old factory of cinematographic films to a sensory journey to places initially unknown, but that gradually enclose a belonging region. The film presents the integration of Socialist Germany – ironically called by Western Dark Germany – and the definition of a new scope. In the darkness of the plant and from other hidden sensations of places, we are immersed in constant discoveries of the territory, combined with feelings of opening and closing, evaluation of distances and survey of new measures. The film overlaps past and future in layers of sensations that balance between the disappearance and the invention of a place.

Last Exit Alexanderplatz

Last Exit Alexanderplatz is a film about the ongoing, but politically disputed and so far unsuccessful attempt to transform the former East-German Alexanderplatz into a high-end, Manhattan-like business district. Through interviews with the architects and politicians, who were involved in the competition held for the square in 1993, the film highlights the dogmatism and insensitivity that characterized much of planning in post-reunification Berlin. But it also depicts a square, which despite the failures and missed opportunities of the 1990s, seems to have regained its foothold in the city.
