The Singer: A Montford Point Marine

“The Singer: A Montford Point Marine” tells the story of Henry Charles Johnson, one of the first African Americans in the U.S. Marine Corps and a professional crooner. Lured by the dignified Marine uniform and the allure of the G.I. Bill, he's abruptly thrown into the bare, segregated world of Camp Montford Point, a far cry from the lush expansiveness of Camp Lejeune he'd imagined. The harsh realities of Southern segregation strike a jarring contrast to his accustomed diversity of Manhattan, escalating further with hostility from drill instructors. Undeterred, his resolve is galvanized by the dream of donning the Marine uniform and the prospects following discharge. Post-discharge, Johnson immerses himself in New York's music scene, enchanting audiences with his soulful, Sinatra-esque timbre. This riveting narrative portrays the unmatched fortitude of the Montford Point Marines, representing a crucial African-American, American, and globally relevant human experience.

the sky in our hands, our hands in the sky

The hidden soundscapes of Toshiko Takaezu’s closed ceramic forms have long captivated Leilehua Lanzilotti. Over the course of several years, Lanzilotti collected recordings of Takaezu’s closed forms, gently tapping their surfaces and revolving them so the small ceramic rattles within them resound. Like Takaezu, Lanzilotti finds echoes of the brilliant landscapes of Hawai’i in the combination of vibrant glazes and quiet interior aural environments. Lanzilotti has combined the recorded sounds of Takaezu’s closed forms with footage shot on the island of Hawai’i—at the base of Kilauea, the slopes of Mauna Loa, and the top of Mauna Kea. In the overlay of sound, texture, color, and light, we get the feeling of being inside Takaezu’s multisensory landscapes. [Overview courtesy of Leilehua Lanzilotti]

A Plot, A Scandal

Ligia Lewis filmed A Plot, A scandal in the historic quarters of Rimini, Italy, a site the artist sees as upholding “Eurocentric ideals of (white) Man’s dominion over the land.” One recurring aspect of the landscape, the towering cypress trees in ordered rows, stands as an example. The film opens with the sonic resonance of the church bell portrayed later as a towering monument, pointing to Christian ideals that served as both a precursor to the Enlightenment and bedfellow in maintaining this hierarchical order. Weaving together multiple historical epics with political and mythical narratives, the work uses ideas of spectacle and scandal to address the continued dispossession of “Europe’s Others,” as Lewis describes them. The Beirut Port Explosion: The Welders

The August 2020 explosion in the port of Beirut—understood to be one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in recorded history—killed over 200 people and injured over 6,500, while devastating large parts of the city. Lebanese and international authorities quickly came to the same conclusion: The vast quantities of ammonium nitrate stored in warehouse 12 were detonated by a fire that was the consequence of shoddy welding work that had been carried out by Syrian workers on site earlier in the day. Building on our previous investigation with Mada Masr into this deadly explosion, in which we mapped the progression of the fire, the epicentre of the blast, and the layout of the contents stored inside the warehouse, Forensic Architecture and the FFA Investigative Unit looked into the validity of these widely circulated claims about the origins of the fire.
