What kind of futures can be read in the impersonal fragments of our reality? It’s a question that inevitably gains attention and importance when it’s posed to those who the future, pre-eminently, belongs to. Already in her debut film, Little Figures (2003), Sarah Vanagt gauged the historical imagination of children by inviting immigrant children to improvise an imaginary conversation between three historical figures, immortalized as statues, in Brussels. Fifteen years and many transformations later, she decided to reverse the question and ask children to read the future in the elusive imprints of their city. Onto countless abstract patterns, brought to life with the help of an old magic lantern, children from Brussels, Athens and Sarajevo project their own impressions, dreams and fears. The result is a form of “magical reading”, as the perception of unforeseen correspondences and constellations that confront us with the undercurrent of the present.

Canadian Will Gadd uses his unmatched ice climbing skills and knowledge to lead a scientific expedition into a previously unexplored territory beneath the Greenland ice sheet, to collect data on moulins and meltwater, and contribute to our understanding of the impacts of climate change on the environment. Jonathan was born and raised in the U.S., while Calag was born and raised in the Philippines. After getting into a fight at school, they are forced to spend the day at the same house and the discord is inescapable. The film's central themes are assimilation, shame, and masculinity.

Once the site of China's early tech industry, Jiuxiangiao is now a 'shanty area' slated for urban renewal. With support from the Soviet Union, factories began producing China's first home grown large scale computers and telephone switchboards. The Hongxia was built as part of a network of amenities including a ballroom and gaming arcade, all intended to enrich the cultural lives of workers. There were onsite nurseries at factories, free swimming pools and the cinema, where entry was free or five cents at most. As interviewees mourn the loss of these services, developers are knocking. 'To tear this place down and build skyscrapers - it makes my heart ache!' laments Wei Guotian, the theatre's former manager.
