Direction Sud-Est

Direction Sud-Est follows L'Anniversaire de Bambou, the previous installment in Gérard Courant's Carnets filmés. It revisits some of the themes that made the earlier parts so charming: a passion for small towns and villages teeming with life (a market day in Saint-Marcellin) or deserted (Visan, Brignon), the importance of nature, an interest in the most mundane things (the sequence of magazine covers in a Saint-Marcellin newsstand), a love of animals (cats, dogs, horses), and interactions with artists (the actress Rosette, the journalist Frédéric Chaleil) through their daily lives.

La Grande Invasion

Our most mundane daily lives are full of chemicals. Embedded in plastics, detergents and toasters, nestled in food, cans, toys, shampoos, they are invisible and everywhere at once, including in our bodies. Consumer society and petrochemical magic wander into our little interiors under names that are strictly unknown and perfectly barbaric. Phthalates, brominated flame retardants, parabens, bisphenol-A have the unfortunate disadvantage of burglarizing our hormonal privacy: they are endocrine disruptors. For the renowned scientists who appear in this documentary, this chemical impregnation is not unrelated to the development of so-called modern diseases – from breast cancer to obesity. The observation, rather serious, does not prevent the film from taking the side of the second degree.

Mussolini-Hitler: The Killer's Opera

Hitler and Mussolini were able to assist each other in achieving their respective designs. But when the conflict came to a head, the realities of war soon tore the mask off of their united front. Two nations with totally different cultures had sworn allegiance to each other, but their divergences would soon make themselves abundantly clear. The idea of the film is to examine Italy and Germany's false alliance, particularly from the point of view of Mussolini, the less powerful of the two despots, and therefore the more inclined to believing in castles in the air. Their relationship is film-worthy in and of itself, but in addition, it tells the history of World War II, seen from the "enemy's" point of view. It will lead us to address certain aspects of the conflict that are less well-known, but no less rich in what they have to teach us.

Found Memories

Each citizen of Jotuomba plays an integral role in village life. Madalena is responsible for baking bread; each morning she stacks her rolls as Antonio prepares the coffee. The two share a morning ritual of arguments and insults, followed by an amicable cup of coffee on the bench outside Antonio's shop. At midday the church bells ring, summoning the villagers to mass. In the early evening, they all share a meal together. And so life proceeds in Jotuomba, the days languidly drifting into one another; the only variations seem to be in the weather. But, one day Rita arrives looking for a place to stay.

Un dieu à la peau douce

In a sequence shot, the slightly slowed movement of hands manipulating and caressing the surface, whose texture is like skin criss-crossed with scars, a wax sculpture that is vaguely anthropomorphic. The sound is the voice of Mathieu Amalric, giving a raw account of three nights of sex that Simon shares with Robert and Nessim, their African lover. With this ball of black matter, a dark satellite seemingly detached from its feature film, Pierre Creton reveals the night-time, and painful, reverse shot of Bel été’s gentle community Utopia. In Krzysztof Warlikowski’s stunning first production for the Paris Opera, the characters in the twilight of their existence are still haunted by their past.

Sketch XXX

“Sketch XXX (work in progress)” in addition to its “poetic” and “political” content also brings the spectator to his capacity for revolt as an individual before being carried away by an obedient and non-thinking collective membership … The gradual erasure of our antagonistic individual-collective concepts will perhaps help us as individual-collective to imagine that perhaps all the elements of the living being connected this invalidates all “individualist” attempts.
