All in Order

Herbert (Heinz Lieven) is a solid, middle-class engineer who one day quits his job and ensconces himself at home (preferably in the bathroom), refusing to say very much to anyone. His wife (Dorothea Moritz ) is all the more upset at his behavior because on Sunday mornings he goes out into the street and yells at the top of his lungs for everyone to "get up." Eventually, the hard-working wife who is also earning their support convinces Herbert to go to a clinic for treatment. But is it a clinic he needs? Or is Herbert rebelling against a society that is too ordered, too sterile, too buried in the monotony of routine?

Liebe macht Erfinderisch

Cab driver Hugo Meier is married to two women and lives at two addresses. He therefore lives according to a precise timetable. This has worked well so far. However, Hugo has an accident and can't get home. The two worried wives contact their police stations and ask for help. Two officers immediately do their duty and investigate. Hugo is now in dire need of help. With the not entirely voluntary help of his friend and neighbor Oskar Stöckli, Hugo leads the officers and the wives into a labyrinth of fantastic excuses and ludicrous lies. Harmless wives are transformed into hysterical bitches and well-meaning friends into hot-blooded, gay seducers.

Roman Dialogue

'The subject of this film is the conversation between a man and a woman. A couple, maybe lovers, maybe married, it doesn't matter. (...) During this conversation, we do not see but the city of Rome. I wanted to transmit that what Rome provokes in me, the feeling of an intrinsic matter, indissoluble, in difference with Paris, made of small parks and open spaces, crossed by the sky and the wind. Hand in hand with the film, the difficulty of the two lovers assumes a clearer, more explicit form. But as much as, in my opinion, it is impossible to describe and film Rome, the difficulty in the love of a couple can never be totally understood.' - Marguerite Duras, Venice film festival catalogue, 1982.
