Amazonia

Amazonia is a live-narrated essayistic meditation on one of the key sites where the virtual world of e-commerce becomes physical: the Amazon.com fulfillment centers where the millions of items available for purchase with the click of a mouse await our orders. The film visits the four cities - New Castle, Delaware; Fernley, Nevada; Coffeyville, Kansas; and Campbellsville, Kentucky - where Amazon's four original fulfillment centers were located to meditate on the impacts of our online purchases on the people and places "at the other end of the internet."

The film is an alert and a cry for help from the Guajajara for the protection of forests and their Awá Guajá relatives. One of the last hunting and gathering peoples in the world, whose way of life depends essentially on the forest, has its days numbered if the destruction continues.

Signals

A single human figure waves back and forth in a pattern that reproduces the composer’s movements making the shaker sound on which the piece is based. The movement was initially videoed with a phone, the sound recorded on a good deck. The video was then analyzed carefully frame by frame, and converted to a movement score that was then performed by a dancer and a homemade camera. In this process it becomes something other, refracted through multiple layers of interpretation, its calm insistence full of a sense of meaning that finally passes without ever having revealed more than the enigmatic gesture itself. Shot with a homemade pinhole camera onto homemade emulsion.

Drugs: an Educational Ride Through the Year 2099

Director Owain Hollett's debut film is a science fiction anti-humor satire about the United States' over-perspective drug and opioid crisis. Set in the year 2099, the pharmaceutical companies govern the world. They've forced drugs down every citizen's throats from birth, and now everyone is a customer. Only Owen2 can prevent this future from unfolding by sending a documentary about the future to the past. However, is this "future" that different form the present...?

Bugs and Beasts Before the Law

Bugs and Beasts Before the Law explores the history and legacy of the “animal trials” that took place in medieval Europe, in which animals—and other non-humans, such as insects and inanimate objects— were put on trial for various crimes and offences, ranging from trespassing and thievery, to assault and murder. This history of colonial law-making forged political and sometimes profane relation- ships between humans and animals. Bambitchell’s essayistic film reimagines common perceptions of legal history and, in doing so, produces a world where past and present, fiction and non-fiction, human and animal fuse.

A Word for Human

The library is a stronghold of humanism, but today libraries are more than places for borrowing books. At the Royal Library in the heart of Copenhagen, researchers and intermediaries work side by side with the library's visitors who come to read and study, but also to participate in talks, concerts, lectures and exhibitions that fill the halls all year round. This documentary looks behind the scenes in a year where Marina Abramovic and Olafur Eliasson contribute to the program, and where colonial history and climate change take center stage.
