Soleil, un business doré

Since the late 1970s, the dangers of the sun to health have been widely recognized. As a result, the global turnover in the sunscreen industry is estimated to exceed 9 billion euros. However, when considering the sometimes contradictory medical advice, the guilt over the ecological disaster caused by the runoff of sunscreen products into the ocean, and scandals surrounding expensive creams that are ineffective or even harmful to health, a deeper examination of this very obscure sector seems essential.

Diane (wrapped in plastic)

A super 8 hauntology. Reimagining a series of one-way conversations with the permanently off-camera Diane, foraged in fragments from the screen of a cathode ray TV - onto an expired Ektachrome 160 super 8 sound cartridge (best before 1990). The film was home-processed, then wrapped in plastic and buried in the woods. ‘Diane…’ is a collaboration between the original source material, ourselves, the body of the film, and the earth it was buried in. The soundtrack was recorded directly onto the magnetic strip of the film, firstly in camera, secondly using a super 8 motorised editor, adding to the fragmentation and abstraction of the soundtrack (No additional digital editing has taken place). The film can be screened in its original form on a sound super 8mm projector, or as a digital video.

Letter to my daughter from the land of women

A filmed diary that the director, Silvia Staderoli, addresses to her 16-year-old daughter and to all teenage girls around the world. In the context of France in the era of “Me too,” her daughter's hopes for a better future collide with the reality of daily, systemic gender violence. The “land of women” of the title does not exist, but alongside the bitter realization of a male-oriented society, the tension and collective effort for radical change emerges. Between cinema, confession, and literature, the film is a chronicle of life moments and encounters with women committed to fighting gender violence.

Dancing Palestine

As the Palestinian identity continues to be threatened with violent erasure, young Palestinians turn to their folk dance, the dabke, to assert their existence. From its humble beginnings as a worker’s dance, the dabke has come to represent an evolving history of cultural resistance, and is needed now more than ever. Dancing Palestine is a document of this embodiment of collective memory – as those who piece together a dabke choreography also piece together their identities. Together with the film – a performance in itself – the dabke is a testament to Palestinians’ deep love of life and an insistent act of contribution to the archive of Palestine in the present.
