Ryoko, 21 Years Old

The filmmaker looks into problems of personal communication by focusing on the letters of a woman who has done enjokosai, that is, a young woman who agrees to talk with or meet or go to a hotel with (usually older) men for money. The director himself met Ryoko, the film's subject, via her telephone messaging system. Discarding the flood of sensational images found in the mass media, this film illustrates the thoughts of Ryoko and others from the perspective of those actually involved.

Blue Max

Blue Max (1997) shows a woman looking out of a window, but also working with extreme close-ups: The street, her neck, the window, her knees, the floor and her toes, brought together by the sound of a passing train. Her ears, her mouth, the wall and the door. The sparkling glass of a window and the young woman on top of a naked young man and later the shadows on the wall of both of them. A telephone is ringing and the clouds in the blue sky are travelling by while it all turns into a rape. And the calmness of both of them is quite irritating when they later watch TV together. It's the Obon holiday. The city has forgotten the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and only the cicadas echo in the streets. The men in yellow helmets, Kagawa and his senior, Saito, arrive. We're the only ones working now, aren't we? The conversation between the two part-timers at the gardener's shop is always in a deadlock. But no matter how much they curse each other, they can't be separated forever. Because he is a ground-bound spirit. They have no choice but to live alone in the city. In the treetop of a big tree, Kagawa's arm, dripping with fresh blood, sways in the wind. In an empty landscape that could be anywhere in Japan, the sad emptiness of people whose existence has been forgotten hangs in the air... Neither horror nor comedy, this is a new genre of splatter labour movie.

The Red Leaf Legend

In 1968, Taitung Hongye Little League defeated Japan's Wakayama Little League 7-0, which was a legendary story of that era. The barefooted children of the Bunun tribe used stones as balls and sticks as sticks to win Taiwan the glory of defeating Japan. But what's the truth behind the legend? Where is the legendary young player now? This film goes into the fog of the premature death of more than half of the players, not only the stigma of impostor, but also the lament of underappreciated talent, and the baseball dream of the next generation of children.

I am a university student who is about to graduate. I'm a university student about to graduate, but I don't want to get a job, I just want to be on my parents' payroll. The only thing I can think of is "working is a bad word". This film is a re-edited version of the 70-minute version completed in 1990, with additions and deletions. The unique tempo of the dialogue and the unhurried direction create a humorous world unique to director Sabu that no one else can imitate.

Dodge Ball in Heat

One day in the hot summer, a high school girl transfers to another school. As she is saying goodbye to her friends at the school gate, she hears the bell at the station. Forty minutes to go until the next train... So began the last dodgeball game on the riverbank. The yellow ball flew over everyone's head. The two boys who liked her look at each other. One of them calls out to her. You've got a sore shoe, haven't you? Then she goes barefoot and hugs the boy. Then the train bell rings. Bye bye!" She waved loudly to everyone with mixed feelings and headed for the station... Everyone has their own sweet and sour memories of their teenage years. This is not a new theme, but it is straightforwardly expressed in a game of dodgeball. The interplay of cuts and camera work is also unique. The relaxed flow of after-school time and the urgency of the impending departure of the train all come together to create an ups and downs in the drama of separation.

こわれもの

I'm telling you to be a great person like my dad. Tokuichi was at one time a prominent figure in an amateur band. Now he's unemployed, behind on his rent and alimony for his divorced wife and children. One day, his old bandmate, Kiichi, invites him to be the singer of his new band. When he goes to his shop to ask her about it, he finds the woman he had met before waiting for him with a message from Kiichi. The two hit it off and go to Kiichi's training camp, but when they arrive, the band has already broken up. A man who is clumsy and always misses his luck, a man who eats up other people's dreams and is always on the move, and a woman who stands dangerously between the two. The more the story progresses, the more we see the many facets of each of them, and the more the story lingers. From the noisy dialogues and cuts, music can be heard.
