The land of southwestern New Mexico is contoured by rolling hills and sweeping valleys and streaked with arroyos. Land With No Rider centers on four cattle ranchers who know this region of the Mimbres River Valley like the back of their hands. As they speak about their lives, their ruminations often linger like poetry, noting the sound of snow falling or singing softly along with the radio. They rise with the sun and still tend to their herds at dusk, the soft purple hues tingeing the light as the ranchers reflect on the possibility of being the last of their generation to work this land. Director Tamar Lando’s transportive vérité portrait of the often solitary yet beautiful world of these ranchers is part oral history, part patient ode to a valley in transition.
The film consists of two love stories, "First, Second, Third" and "Love is a Book". The former tells the story of two male lovers who start with a sexual relationship, develop feelings, and then openly share their emotions, leading to a deep connection. The latter revolves around two female lovers, reuniting after a long separation, experiencing a surge of past emotions and the inevitable clash with present realities. Love is a book, and while they are in different chapters of their emotional journeys, both stories share similar, ambiguous, and pure expressions of love.

In the northern reaches of Manitoba, resting on the edge of Canada’s Hudson Bay, sits the small town of Churchill. Churchill’s most famous visitor, however, is the mighty Polar Bear. Every year, hundreds of bears gather on the shoreline surrounding Churchill, awaiting the sea ice that forms on Hudson Bay during winter. Once it forms, they’ll use it as a platform from which to hunt seals, but until then, they wait on the coast, creating a fascinating, and potentially dangerous, interaction between the residents of Churchill and the world’s largest land carnivore.
