The Vikings: Life And Conquests

This 1959 Encyclopedia Britannica Film explores the lives and actions of Vikings, also called Norsemen or Northmen. While perhaps slightly romanticized, the film attempts to depict the Vikings’ travels and impact on history, by showing their traditions, explorations, their raiding and pillaging of their neighbors, and their eventual conversion to Christianity. The film also portrays the daily life of Vikings, including people plowing fields, harvesting hay, grinding grain, and men making tools and doing metalwork. This is followed by a map and animation of the furthest Viking explorations including to North America and through Russia to Constantinople. The film concludes with the departure of a Viking longship.

The 11-minute black-and-white film follows Charlie, a mischievous chimpanzee, as he learns an important lesson about bicycle safety. On his way to school, Charlie repeatedly ignores traffic rules—riding on the sidewalk, failing to signal, disobeying pedestrian crossings, and even giving his chimpanzee girlfriend a ride. After a conversation with a policeman, Charlie understands the importance of following safety regulations. On his next trip, he becomes a model cyclist, demonstrating responsible riding behavior. The film uses humor and engaging storytelling to teach young viewers about road safety.

Rural Rat Control

Farms are 'islands' of rat life, providing abundant food and harborage (shelter). But rats cost the farmer money and spread disease. This U.S. government training film demonstrates practical methods of rat control around farm buildings, animal feeding sites, and the homestead. The key is to cut off access to all food sources and places to hide. Methods for securing grain storage areas such as corn cribs include raising the floor off the ground, placing chew-proof metal flashing on wood edges, and adding rat-proof covers or lids.
