Bromley: Light After Dark

David Bromley found that art appeased the voices in his head and helped him find beauty in the world. So he made the life-changing decision to commit his whole being to something meaningful. Light after Dark takes us into the world of this prominent Australian artist. With intimate access, we peel away the layers of anxiety, phobias and suicide survival, whilst embracing the humour, energy, and love that is ever-present in the Bromley world. David’s journey is not complete without his wife Yuge and it’s through this powerful partnership that we witness firsthand the fragility of David’s world and state of mind. As the Bromley’s live their authentic lives, interviews with friends, critics and musicians add perspectives and insight on creative process, mental health, and commercialisation of art.

In Grave Danger of Falling Food

In this introductory video to permaculture, Bill Mollison, the movement’s co-founder, takes the viewer through the history and developments of the movement. With startlingly laconic humor and insight he deconstructs the modern agribusiness and the “modern plague” : manicured ornamental lawns. In this video he offers an antidote, which is an antidote to both our currently unsustainable practices and our unsustainable culture. Both of these have to change and adapt. Permanently.

Printer Light Play

One of the main “mysteries” of working with the lab involves grading the print: adjusting or “correcting” the color balance for overexposures, underexposures, or unwanted color shifts in the original. Grading is done by adding or removing degrees of red, green, or blue light on the copier: the standard setting for an average exposure in our lab is 30 Red, 30 Green, and 30 Blue. Filmmakers often leave this work to the lab technician, and they only have a general understanding of the process. In our case, we wanted to use this film to learn more about it. We filmed a scene, under the light, of our son Ivor holding a Kodak Colour Patch Card (a male version of the "Kodak Lady" often spliced for quality control purposes on a print). This normally exposed scene is subject to a range of 84 different print light settings out of 132,651 possible combinations. The soundtrack consists of a voice announcing the print light variations used. (Arthur Cantrill & Corinne Cantrill)

HDT: The Holden Dealer Team

In the late sixties, a remarkable story in Australian motorsport began. It was a time when the Holden car was ubiquitous in Australia but even though they were strongly represented on the race tracks - it was without factory recognition. To get around a world-wide ban by General Motors on motorsport, in 1969 Holden engaged the wily Harry Firth to manage a team called The Holden Dealer Team, supposedly supported by Holden retailers. What followed was Australian motorsport legend. From the team's first drivers in Colin Bond and Peter Brock in the Monaro GTS 350, through the Torana dominated seventies and the Commodore dominated early eighties. The documentary documents the mighty battles between the little Torana XU1 and big Ford GTHO Falcons, the domination of the Torana A9X, the stunning debut of the Commodore in the Repco round-Australia rally in 1979, and the emergence of Peter Brock as an Australian icon at Bathurst.

The Lost Tribe

While ex-Mormon-lesbian-atheist Sue-Ann Post has carved out a name for herself as a stand-up comic in Australia, she has been estranged from her family ever since she decided to abandon her Mormon upbringing. When she publicly demanded to be excommunicated from the Mormon church on a national TV talk show, she got what she asked for—leaving her completely ostracized from her Mormon community. This highly engaging doc follows Post as she journeys to Salt Lake City where she has been invited to speak at the Affirmation Conference—an annual gathering of gay and lesbian Mormons and ex-Mormons who are trying to reconcile their faith with their homosexuality. As cynical as she has become about her former religion, Post finds herself struggling with conflicting emotions that she had buried for years, while realizing that she has finally found her own lost tribe.
