La bonita

There must be men who think intellect and eloquence are sexy, but they don’t get a mention from the women in this short student film from Cuba. Over a black screen, they paint a picture of the man as hunter and the woman as willing prey who must give her all to arouse and maintain his sexual interest. The competition, lurking like vultures, must be ruthlessly eradicated, and even in your own home you shouldn’t think of wandering around in an old housecoat and slippers. We then see just how harsh the dictates of beauty can be: close-up sequences document beauty treatments that would earn medals in wartime. No area of the female body is allowed to go unnoticed. You have to suffer to be beautiful, the cliché goes. La Bonita reveals just how much suffering that entails.

What Has Been Lost

My mother has died. Her name was Maria. Her children, we, Raúl and Santiago, discover among the objects left by our mother hundreds of photographs from our maternal grandfather, from REGINA -our great-aunt-, from our mother, from our father... And through those photographs, and with the help from an old camera -my grandfather's inheritance-, I, -along several trips to the places where those photographs were taken-, seek to recover and not lose my memory... that of my family. In the end, we will have to think on our memory and on what we have preserved and lost.

Wasteland

Brisa’s daily life alternates between the world of show business, appearances, and the stark reality presented by his son Hilario, who fell into poverty as a result of his addiction to drugs. The film portrays an intense fragment of Susana and Hilario’s story, the difficulties that arise when she tries to keep her professional commitments, the elegance with which she manages to avoid the low blows and her pain; but, fundamentally, the film reveals how this woman faces a difficult process without losing her dignity or sense of humor.

Murders in Chicago

Although the title (which translates as "Murders in Chicago") promises a gangster story, this is more of a murder mystery that kicks off with the seemingly accidental death of a construction worker, followed shortly after by that of a noted publisher (an uneasy-looking Eduardo Fajardo). What follows is a very confusing story in which the police, a police coroner (José Campos) and a vagrant (Fernando Sánchez Polack) who witnessed Fajardo's death embark on separate inquests on what actually happened. Meanwhile, June (María Luisa Rubio), who works as a secretary for the publishing company, is under pressure by a blackmailer (Antonio Jiménez Escribano) who has pictures of her in the sack with the deceased publisher.
