Empathy for Concrete Things

Based on their experiences living and working amongst Soviet-era concrete, panel-block apartments, the filmmaker, together with five visual artists, examine past and present attitudes towards their former homes. Combining touching, personal stories with experimental research on the history of twentieth-century art and architecture, the film creates both a compelling narrative, and a contemporary aesthetic of panel-block mass housing using original watercolors, put into motion using digital animation and stop-motion techniques. As global and personal histories interweave, the film explores notions of moral and political responsibility as evinced in physical space.

Tania

GDR 1961: Tamara Bunke, daughter of Jewish exiles from Argentina, not only falls for the political goals of the rousing revolutionary Che Guevara during a state visit. She also meets Ulises Estrada, the commandant of Che's team. Ignited by the fire of the revolution, she gets involved in a diabolical espionage deal with the Stasi in order to cheat her way out of Cuba. In Cuba, she ends up caught between all fronts: under the watchful eye of the Stasi, which expects results from her, but in reality solely dedicated to Che's revolution, Tamara allows herself to be trained as a double spy by Che's troops. At the same time, her honest love grows for Commandante Ulises, who eventually gives her the choice of following her personal happiness and going into hiding rather than following Che's plans to liberate South America, which by now he considers a suicide mission. Klappe

Shamelessly, Jürgen Brüning samples and remixes clips and scraps of material from his own work as a director and producer (among others for Bruce LaBruce & Shu Lea Cheang) with borrowed pop cultural references from around the world for this video essay on gay identity. His reflections are connected by songs that address miscellaneous news and social issues with egalitarian verve, sung by hot guys in a public toilet. A film full of meandering associations and unexplained references, it's at the same time a political musical and the taking stock of a romantic revolutionary. Anti-religious, anti-authoritarian and somehow also a bit anti-everything!
