Talib Shah Hossaini, a 37-year-old Afghan filmmaker and asylum-seeker, lives in Moria on the Greek island of Lesbos – the biggest refugee camp in Europe until it burnt to the ground in autumn 2020. One year into his life in the camp, Talib Shah finds himself on the verge of losing hope. Instead of giving up, however, he decides to shoot a film called Picnic − an insider’s look at the lives of thousands of refugees stuck in a place sometimes described as a humanitarian disaster. Exploring topics such as dreams versus reality, art as a means of survival, or the current immigration policies in Europe, the film invites us to become better acquainted with the people who will soon be our neighbours.

The Relapse into Decadence

The short film "Der Rückfall in die Dekadenz" by Federico Mesina deals with the 28-year-old actor Friedrich von Rebenstiel, who has agreed to be interviewed for a film. In the style of a mockumentary, von Rebenstiel is also accompanied outside of the interview. In an ironic way, the short film attempts to break up the fiction described by Friedrich with shots from reality and at the same time show the problematic relationship between role and private person. In doing so, the initially clear boundary becomes increasingly blurred and ultimately erases the private person completely.

Behind the Lines

Amany Al-Ali stands out as one of Syria's few female cartoonists, residing in her father's home in Idlib, the last city unconquered by Assad's forces. Like her remaining neighbours she's submitted to relentless Russian airstrikes and caught between advancing troops and extremist groups. Despite acclaim for her art, she faces threats, condemnation, and degradation, causing her to contemplate leaving. Ironically, her artwork has graced galleries in France and Italy but never received exposure within Syria's borders. The film captures her endeavor to organize her inaugural exhibition in Idlib. This experience compels her to confront the harsh realities of a city defined by bombings and male interference. While organizing drawing lessons for women and girls, comforting her young niece, and sharing her story with the documentary crew, Amany's outlook on the future gradually erodes.

André Heller's Luna Luna

André Heller commissioned Heinz Bütler, a Swiss filmmaker known for working with artists, to create a short documentary about Luna Luna. The film offers rare access to Luna Luna's artists as they painted their rides and attractions, culminating in the excitement of being at the fairgrounds surrounded by performers, crowds, and music. The camera walks us through the artist-designed pavilions and takes us for a ride on Jean-Michel Basquiat's Ferris wheel. The soundtrack includes some of the music heard on the rides and attractions at the park: first Miles Davis's "Tutu", played on Basquiat's Ferris wheel, followed by a number of songs by Philip Glass (who contributed music to Roy Lichtenstein's pavilion), and finally, Blue Chip Orchestra's composition for Salvador Dalí's dome.

Embodied Chorus

A Beirut rooftop conversation about living with Sexually Transmitted Infections opens into a cinematic dialogue, as Danielle and Moe draw raw and vibrant images from their personal experiences. Danielle filmed herself in sober and melancholic images to grasp what is going on, while Moe plays with memories and sensations of a queer body “invaded” by a virus. While they engage with five actresses and actors to embody the testimonies of individuals who also lived with STIs, “forbidden” stories begin to exist and enter a collaborative exploration of intimacy, bodies, stigma and shame.

Mångata

Mångata is a reflection of the Moon’s light on a water surface which indicates the way to the Moon. This light also helps to rescue little Alya. She is the only one saved from a refugee boat that sunk in the Mediterranean. Many years later, as an astronaut on a pioneering mission, she will need this light again. Maja Costa takes the refugee subject, usually shown as a drama or bitter tragedy, into new territories. Under the attractive guise of science fiction she may concentrate not on what is going on nowadays but look into the future with hope and optimism challenging prejudice and stereotypes.
