Verlieben vielleicht

The film tells the story of a young guy who stops off in Munich in search of happiness, a steady relationship and fulfilling dreams. First he picks up two old acquaintances to go on a drinking spree through pubs and bars. The good old days of carefree life in the past are to be brought back to life for one more night. The handicap: the guy is broke. His friends generously step in. Already slightly drunk, our "hero" meets a relative whom he wants to hit up for money, but is knocked out by him in the pub's toilet. The broken lip was worth it in the end. He is a thousand marks richer. Enough to continue his drinking spree, but also enough to use the money to seek his fortune in the land of opportunity. His friends' reservations about the spontaneous venture are swept aside without further thought. Why worry? Happiness lies in the street, maybe I'll make the big bucks and (or) fall in love. At the end of the movie, we see him where we expected him to be: Munich-Riem Airport.

Reichsautobahn

While working on "Deutschlandbilder" (1983), Hartmut Bitomsky was examining film material produced by the Nazi regime when he came across an abundance of footage documenting the planning and construction of motorways. In this found footage documentary he investigates what this material actually says: the motorway is stylized within it as a promise of progress and modernity, a "lifeline of the nation", less a straightforward piece of infrastructure than a prestige object, a work of art.

Laufen lernen

Reni Wirth is a woman in her "prime," in her late thirties, a housewife like millions of others and seemingly fulfilled by caring for her husband and two teenage daughters. Despite slight irritations about her mere existence as a housewife, she takes good care of her family. A preventive breast cancer screening completely disrupts the apparent family idyll. Although the worst fears are not confirmed, after days of terrible anxiety, Reni begins to understand the misery of her personal situation: her daughters will soon be on their own, and she can hardly return to the profession she once learned. What will be left for her? Reni takes a courageous but uncertain step toward somewhere where she suspects she will find "freedom."

Der Bastard

The two-part film describes the unusual fate of a worker that was born out of wedlock in 1925 as a "bastard", as it was called at the time. Even though his birth was under a special star, his life is also full of ups and downs: gain and loss, victory and defeat, laughter and tears, all of this is always close together in Rando's life. And people from the most diverse backgrounds cross Rando's lifelines. Some are of good character and will help him, while others will throw a spanner in the works. But Rando is not the type to stumble; he masters any situation with vitality, irrepressible vigor and his proletarian instinct. Rando is often a wise man, but he is also often a fool -- those around him never know what to expect.

Asphalt Night

This low-budget drama details the unlikely friendship between a smart-aleck seventeen-year-old punk and a thirty-year-old rock 'n roll musician in search of songwriting inspiration. Angel heads out to the streets of Berlin in his drag-racer to revitalize his flagging creativity. He is desperately trying for a new song that refuses to surface. He meets scrappy Johnny on the streets and saves him from everyone he tends to alienate: cops, motorcycle gangs, and passers-by. Johnny has his guitar with him and is the first to break Angel's deadlock. A tune he plucks out is just the beginning that Angel was looking for. The rest of the song lies out there somewhere and the two head into Berlin's night spots to find it.

Film Before Film

An exhilarating and amusing encyclopedic look at the "prehistory" of cinema. Werner Nekes charts the fascination with moving pictures which led to the birth of film, covering shadow plays, peep shows, flip books, flicks, magic lanterns, lithopanes, panoramic, scrolls, colorful forms of early animation, and numerous other historical artiffices. Working with these formats, early "producers" created melodramas, comedies, -- as well as lots of pornography -- anticipating most of the forms known today. Nekes probes these colorful toys and inventions in a rich and rewarding optical experience. Film Before Film is a bewildering assault of exotic (and sometimes erotic) images and illusions.
