Golden Phoenix

Yan Jun and Li Han-hsiang teamed up again with Lin Dai to tell the love story of a rural lady Jin Feng. Marred by tears and sorrow, this love story reveals the destructive impact of feudal superstition on marital happiness, while standing up for the oppressed who suffer from the tyranny of the powerful few. Although the film concludes on a soothing note, the entire film is permeated with a heavy sense of sadness. The straightforwardness and courageous nature of Jin Feng is very much in line with the vividness and self-confidence of her real self. With her sparkling dark eyes and finely knitted braid, her innocent yet unyielding character attracted many admirers. The yet-to-be famous director King Hu plays the naïve little lad who has a crush on Jin Feng. His speech and expressions are all endearing, providing a lighthearted counterbalance to the film’s somber tone, and making him an extremely outstanding supporting character.

Memento Stella

Makino Takashi takes us to a place where different rules apply. He overwhelms us with his universe, which is built up of countless images, figurative and non-figurative, accompanied by an equally sophisticated soundtrack. At times very abstract and distant, at others almost palpable and narrative. We naturally seek recognition in the infinite layering of the images, and in so doing compose our own story, based on what we ourselves know of the world, using our personal references to help us. In this way, a work arises unique to every viewer, which continues to reverberate long after we leave the cinema.

Those Who Do Not Remember the Past Are Condemned to Repeat It

Those Who Do Not Remember The Past Are Condemned To Repeat It (2020) is an experimental documentary investigating the intersection of People’s Temple (Jonestown) with the first-person survival horror game Outlast 2 developed by Red Barrel. Departing as the digital study of the game, this project attempts to recontextualize the relationship between the mass suicide of People’s Temple in 1978 and the game’s narrative. Composed by the archival materials from FBI and machinima made with the game, this work conveys uncanny audio and visual journey in the understanding the self-destruction, the religious utopia, the binary between capitalism and socialism.

Children’s Game #22: Jump Rope

Stark though it is, the roof terrace with its low ochre-red wall and washed turquoise abstract seems the nearest thing to a garden among the forbidding cliffs of mass housing that rear up all around. Like bold tendrils of organic life, three young girls appear with jump ropes and show off some individual fancy licks, before switching to a stately coordination mode. Their bright white ropes make squiggles in the air like waved sparklers at night, while wrists and feet maintain a rock-steady beat. The joy of skilled movement, of pure synchrony, illuminates their faces.
