Living in the Sahara

This documentary goes back to the origins of the conflict in Western Sahara. The reasons for the Moroccan occupation of this vast territory are economic: the region has mineral (phosphate, uranium, iron) and fishing resources. Spain occupied part of the territory from the end of the 19th century until the 20th century, with the support of France. The Sahrawi people have always fought against colonists; the Polisario Front was created in 1973 with the purpose of fighting Spanish occupation. The Sahrawi cause is supported by Algeria, which recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1976, and Libya in 1980. We see the social organisation of the Saharawis, an originally nomadic people. The film ends by posing a question: What are the prospects for resolving the conflict?

This turned out to be a truly prophetic statement since none of Puccini’s other world successes were received on their first nights as rapturously as Manon Lescaut. The popularity of Puccini’s great masterpiece has never waned and the highly acclaimed Götz Friedrich production at Covent Garden was hailed as an operatic milestone. Two of the world’s leading stars--Kiri Te Kanawa and Placido Domingo--head a strong cast conducted by the brilliant Italian conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli.

Three guests in a luxury hotel. The highly respected managing director of a computer company, an actor and womanizer and finally a bespectacled murderer who has calculated that a hotel room is the perfect setting for the murder of his victim, a Chinese politician passing through. As luck would have it, the three men swap rooms. As a result, the call girl, who is actually expected by the actor, ends up with the murderer, the respected businesswoman expected by the manager goes to the womanizer and the businessman's real wife, who (unexpectedly) turns up to accompany her husband, suddenly finds herself in the same room as the call girl and the murderer. Events come thick and fast and the murderer, whose glasses have been broken in the confusion, is unable to carry out his murder.

A man alone in an empty house somewhere in the Solagne region of France. Despite the pleasent light of spring, the man is prey to anguished thoughts : a brewing storm, the blood of two children, a face glimpsed behind a windowpane, sleepless nights spent waiting for the dawn. The man is Vincet Delaune, a famous novelist. But he is having a hard time finisshing his latedt book. A stone's throw from his house, two little girls were killed. In spite of Vincent's disgust at the crime, he is irresistably drawn to the little abandoned train station where the bodies of the twins were found...

Shepherd’s Delight

Many of my films involve humour, but unlike the earlier work Shepherd’s Delight attempts to confront the problem of humour head-on, referring directly (since a large part of the film is composed of jokes and their analysis) to the viewer’s perception of the film itself. The film is largely concerned with how context determines the reading of information. Since the film’s statements oscillate between the deadly serious (concentrating particularly on an examination of the more sinister aspects of humour) and the totally bogus, with no clearly defined points of changeover, the context is often ambiguous. Hopefully, this strategy undermines both the authority of the ‘serious’ statements and any predictable effect of the ‘jokes’. John Smith, 1984

Ein Schweizer namens Nötzli

Josef Nötzli is a shy and somewhat awkward man. He has been working as an accountant in a chemical plant in West Berlin for 26 years. But Nötzli originally comes from Switzerland. Nötzli started out as an accountant and remained in this position. Due to a misunderstanding, Nötzli suddenly makes someone else's career. At last, Nötzli is able to put his knowledge and concepts into practice. With his ideas, he quickly steers the badly damaged company back into the profit zone. But it is precisely at this moment that Nötzli's high-flying career comes to an abrupt end: the mysterious misunderstanding comes to light and Nötzli is dismissed from his post, accused of deliberately obtaining a position by fraud. Together with his colleague Neubauer, Nötzli ends up back in the accounts department. Now nothing can keep him in the company. He leaves the chemical plant with his friend Neubauer. But is this farewell final?

Christian's participation in this trip was only made possible through close cooperation between his probation officer, the public prosecutor, and the educators at the Johannes Petersen Home. It was conceived and implemented as a last attempt to influence his socially disadvantaged circumstances. Christian is only allowed to be picked up from the Hamburg remand prison immediately before departure. After two months, Christian is back in prison, this time in Portugal. For stealing radios and wristwatches. "Scandal! Bizarre therapy for difficult youths. Seven months of dream travel at the taxpayer's expense!" reads the newspaper. Bauer Publishing sends two reporters to southern Portugal. A clash ensues. The decision not to punish "criminal" children is the target of attacks by right-wing politicians and their press. The Youth Welfare Office considers discontinuing the project. But this is no time for self-pity – the group continues its work.

Miss A and Miss M

Young Lizzie Cole and her newly widowed mother go to stay in the country at a small guesthouse occupied by spinsters, retired schoolmasters and young schoolmistresses. Lizzie becomes quite fond of two particular schoolmistresses who live together in a small cottage. Their lifestyle and living arrangement is a constant source of interest and challenge for Lizzie. However, what she ends up experiencing is beyond the comprehension of a young girl. The story of Miss A And Miss M is a very sensitively performed portrayal of the boundaries of love and friendship.

CLR James Talking to Stuart Hall

Cyril Lionel Robert James (1901-1989) was a historian, journalist and contributor to Marxist thought. Stuart Hall was able to interview him for Channel 4 in the UK . The interview discusses his thoughts on revolution, socialism, and politics. His involvement in activism lasted decades. Born in Trinidad, much of his life was spent in the UK. C.R.L James became a teacher and notably taught Eric Williams. Williams went on to lead Trinidad and Tabago to independence. C.L.R. James also wrote fiction and about cricket. During his youth he did play the sport and wrote Beyond a Boundary (1963) describing cricket’s cultural significance. One of his favorite novels was Vanity Fair. This novel followed the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley during the Napoleonic Wars. James was a figure in the Pan-African movement and the anti-colonial freedom struggle. What tends to be ignored is his concern about class exploitation.

Two men who have been friends for quite some time and who live in different cities maintain a correspondence with Super 8 film reels that they occasionally send to each other. One of these film reels shows a woman who reminds the addressee of a former girlfriend. Immediately and without paying attention to his obligations to the company, he drives the company car to the city of his childhood friend, 780 km away. There he finds out that she has been the secret lover of his Super 8 friend for years. After about three or four weeks, which they spend on the coast of another country without any significant difficulties, the lover of the childhood friend rows his boat alone across the Atlantic after an obviously frame-up rescue operation.

Living Off Love

The exploitation of young men as prostitutes in the district around the Roman coliseum is the focus of Simon Bischoff's documentary and fiction piece that spares no close-up view of male anatomy. This latter trait reveals just as much about the tenor of this film as it does about the body. Several years earlier, Bischoff met the main 17-year-old protagonist here, "Er Moretto," when he was just a 13-year-old runaway. The intervening years show how he changed into a streetwise vendor of sex, and Bischoff also details how the 17-year-old is picked up by a middle-aged man to be his companion. Fiction segments do not fare as well as the documentary aspects of this work, which in the end, seems at least ambiguous, if not questionable, in its intent.
