Choto Bakulpurer Jatri

Dibakar, a humble factory worker sets out with his wife for his marital home in Choto Bokulpur as his wife was disturbed after hearing the news of unrest and violence there. She wants to assure that her parents are safe amidst the revolution of the peasants which the police and army were trying hard to suppress. As they reach the outskirts of the village they are stopped by few men who start questioning them. They are thoroughly searched and their luggage is thrown open to check if they are revolutionaries. They get no evidence against them in their luggage. But, when Dibakar is searched they find a paan wrapped in a piece of paper bearing an advertisement lauding the brave efforts of the revolutionaries and condemning the tortures of the suppressors. Despite Dibakar’s repeated assurance that he isn’t a revolutionary they kill him mercilessly and thus ends an innocent life.

Vikram (Ashotosh Gowariker) is an Indian immigrant from Bombay who lands in San Francisco. His happiness over his arrival in the United States is diminished when customs officers unexplainably trim his tourist visa from six months to one. When he arrives at the home of his sponsor, he finds that the building is abandoned, and his application to study at the University of California has been rejected. He later meets Sue (Heidi Carpenter), a punk-rock femme who works at a late-night theater specializing in horror films, and Vikram becomes very fond of the woman, proposing marriage in hopes of starting a new life in the United States.

It was Antonio Vivaldi who developed the classic symphony orchestra, added coloration to the strings and wind instruments to the ensemble, originated the concerto for solo instruments, and was considered to be one of the greatest violinists of the 18th century. This biographical program chronicles the life and musical styles of Vivaldi, with on-location footage and lush studio re-creations of original settings showcasing the astonishing variety of Vivaldi’s works. Included are extracts from operas, oratorios, masses and sonatas, and concertos for flute, oboe, and trumpets, as well as such violin concertos as The Four Seasons. Fifteen-year-old prodigy Corey Cerovsek portrays the young Vivaldi, and world-renowned violinist Steven Staryk plays Vivaldi as a grown man.

The film's focus is the Jhapan Festival, the great celebration of snakes. Shown are festival preparations, the role of traditional arts and crafts in the worship of the Goddess, devotional singing, and an exposition of ritual action. The difficult and complex symbolism of the ritual is explained by the participants themselves. In addition to the commentary, this makes accessible what is, at first glance, exotic and inexplicable behavior.
