The film's narrator, an observer modeled on the critic Walter Benjamin, takes us on a journey through a variety of urban landscapes, examining public spaces and making connections between light, perception and the culture of attractions in today's consumer society. Structured as a documentary essay in the spirit of city symphony films, ELECTRIC SIGNS features footage in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York, and other cities around the world. Also featured are interviews with prominent lighting designers; advertising and marketing professionals; urban sociologists and visual culture experts; and community activists.

Law Hing is forced by her stepmother to marry the dumb son of the Tang family. Another girl Au To is forced to marry Ma Siu-fuk, son of the rich Ma family, to pay off her father's debts. On the wedding day, To's lover See Fuk-chau returns from Vietnam. Deeply in love with Fuk-chau, To decides to go to the Ma family to decline the arranged marriage. To avoid the Ma elders and her father from losing face, she begs Siu-fuk to stage a pretended marriage. As the wedding ceremonies proceed, To's bridal sedan collides with Hing's in the street. The carriers lock in a row and a confusion reigns in which the brides take the wrong sedans. To is mistakenly taken to the Tang family, while Hing is sent to the Ma family. Although Siu-fuk is attracted to Hing, he agrees to send her home. The four families attempt to settle the case in court. The judge rules that the previous arrangements are but trades and declares them null and void. Fuk-chau and To can now fulfill their wish.

The film is set in a future when the central government attempts to replace every citizen’s name with numbers. In such a social upheaval, Ma Yi cares nothing but cancels an auto-masturbating machine. While Ma Yi doesn’t violate the law, he is however arrested and interrogated by the police.

After the arrest of Yung, Yin finds herself in the awkward situation of visiting Yung’s home for the first time. Meeting the parents, Yin has to skip the usual polite chatter and put away Yung’s items before the court warrant arrives. In this austere and awkward first meeting, they talk about the absent son. The long night drags on as the shocked and worried parents are overwhelmed by the opposing political views, by relationships torn and healed, by their hopes and regrets. When dawn comes, what will become of Yung?

China Season 6 and Season 7 winners Karrie Ng and Sumi Liang, who were both mentored by Hacken in the program, appeared as guest artists for the concert.

Hung Sin Nui plays a mother of three who is burning with desires to serve society. Working as a journalist, she stays out for long hours, resulting in negligence of her children and her husband’s suspicions of infidelity. The twist, at once ironic and realistic, is that her unsupportive husband had actually written in his youth a book on gender equality. On the verge of divorce, the couple reconciles after the husband’s mother, sympathetic to the difficulties faced by women, rises to the occasion with timely and prudent advice. Hung’s character, a woman stuck between cultures of old and new, was tailor-made for the star by screenwriter Chu Hak. Director Li Pingqian portrays her struggles with realist and humanistic touches, extending gentle critiques of social prejudices without fanning the ire of resentment.

HKNY was inspired by Italo Calvino’s novel Invisible Cities. Garcia draws on the concept of in-betweenness to construct a story of an individual (the filmmaker) reflecting on his position between Hong Kong, his birthplace, and New York, where he resides.
