Apart

Revolution is pursued for a better love, yet love gets lost in the unpredictable tides of revolution. Veteran actor Lester Chan Chit-Man directs, using the emotions of young people as a thread to connect the Umbrella Movement and the Anti-Extradition Bill protests. When emotions meet politics, social movements and love become intertwined, as four college students drift through their youth. Whispers and embraces, gazes or walking together—the nights in the occupied zones once brought us together. Documentary footage and fictional stories alternate, perhaps evoking memories of the happiness and sorrow of these past years. We thought revolution would ultimately succeed, that it didn’t matter whether we gathered or dispersed. But in the end, we became strangers scattered around the world, only then realizing that regret is inevitable in youth and that looking back always brings a sense of emptiness.

February 2022

Wah and Yee are two young strangers who live next to each other in subdivided units. In February 2022, at the peak of the pandemic, they first become aware of each other’s existence when both are tested positive for COVID-19 and are required to self-isolate at home. The two soon form a bond through music, rekindling their passion for life. Like the partition between the two units is no barrier against the flow of music, social isolation does not bar the growing affection between them. But when the quarantine ends, they become hesitant: Will the magic survive beyond the protective/restrictive wall? A pandemic and local version of Begin Again (2013), the two characters bare their hearts as they chase their dreams amid struggles through music and lyrics.

The World of Mindfulness

During the pandemic, the filmmaker’s son found himself stuck at home for a very long time. Ying Liang watched him cut out a portrait of Abbas Kiarostami from a book, and create a face mask on the face of the Iranian filmmaker. Liang observes how his son builds a ‘world’ on his bed, makes a paper airplane, and flies various places with his new friend Abbas Kiarostami. After spending the whole day flying, he falls asleep on that same bed with the family’s kitten. In his dreams, he uses the ‘magic’ he has learned from an online magic course to remove the face mask. With The World of Mindfulness, Chinese filmmaker Liang – who is now living in Hong Kong – creates a marvellously simple piece about the world of childhood, adding a touch of playful cinephilia.

Ghostless Horror

We enjoy the adrenaline rush given by horror films. But what if we are personally involved in the horror? Director Chun has created a ghost story based on a real case with a dancer murdered, incorporating all marketable ideas like women, supernatural forces and violence. Successfully he persuades the boss to invest in his horror, but there is one “little” requirement – in order to pass the Mainland censorship, no ghost can be presented in the ghost story. So keen to make it work, Chun compromises. While he starts to change the script, an unexpected visitor shows up and leads him to a special journey. A film depicting the bittersweet life of film workers.

THAT SPRING, IN THE SKY OF H-VILLE, THERE WAS ____

That spring, there was _____ in the sky of H-ville. What is _____? No one can tell. The sudden “unknown” caused absurd and strange phenomena. The real nightmare was not the natural disaster, but the man-made one. The regime used this to implement the “state of exception”. The system continued to operate. How much human value would be left? As Giorgio Agamben stated at the beginning of the pandemic, “The epidemic has caused to appear with clarity that the state of exception, to which governments have habituated us for some time, has truly become the normal condition.”

White Powder and Neon Lights

This is the first 16mm Cantonese film in full colour, shot on 1940s state-of-the-art Technicolor film stock. Opera star Man-ha (Leung Bik-yuk) enjoys tremendous popularity during her performances in San Francisco, but drowns herself in the vices and temptations of the big city. Increasingly, she fails to show up for performances, almost causing the theatre to go bankrupt. When she sees her lover for the scoundrel that he is, she also sees the errors of her own ways and saves the theatre, restoring it to glory. Joseph Sunn Jue established the Grandview Film Company in Hong Kong during the 1930s and continued making films in the USA during wartime by collaborating with Chinese opera performers in exile there. Wong Hok-sing, an opera actor himself, directed, wrote and starred in this film. He staged a spectacular play-within-a-play at the end, not only to promote the art of Cantonese opera but also to boost solidarity among overseas Chinese through difficult times.
